Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Eorror on startup "startup_alpha_five"

I created a calc field that would take a very long time to calc by mistake. I crashed Alpha 5 from the task manager to close it. Now I can't start alpha. I get
    error running addin "startup_alpha_five":error 1

I have rebooted and I have reinstalled Alpha 5 and the latest patch build but it still won't start.

I have searched on this and don't see any solutions other than what I have tried.

Does anyone have any other ideas?

    RE: Eorror on startup

    Hi Russ

I have seen this before and suggest the following:
Make a copy of your app before proceeding
    Remove A5 & A5 Runtime if installed - delete the folders where A5 resides ie \Program Files\A5v5.
Remove all refrences of A5 from the Registry (run regedit and search for references to A5)

Re-install A5 and any addins (such as calendar addin) - this seems to give a error if you used in your app and not installed.

    Good luck

      Thanks,
I was hoping to avoid that but I guess that's the ticket at this point. I was hoping I could add something to the addins folder but am not sure what.

        RE: Eorror on startup

This is really getting quite aggravating. I did the uninstall but did not clean out the registry as I have A5V5, A5V5runtime and A5V6 and the registry doesn't seem to differentiate. I would really prefer not to unstall everything.
When I reinstalled it worked until I put in the latest patch at which point the same error came back.
I have work to do and this is a real pain. I would love to hear from someone at Alpha on how to fix this and what causes it. (or from anyone else that has a clue on this.) It would seem that there is some file missing or corrupted that could be replaced without all this bother or uninstalling, rebooting and having the same error.

have you tried to boot and hold down the ctrl-shift, and don't run autoexec and/or startup form

if you can get in, do a conpact, and remove the start up calc

presuming you can successfully open other alpha databases

re reading your problem - I think you may have to clean out the registry, too. Very boring. I looked in A5V5, but could not find that specific file.

              Thanks Marty.
This is really getting frustrating. I reuninstalled A5 then cleaned out the registry, except entries that were obviously Ver6 and reinstalled. I STILL GET THE SAME ERROR. I've been able to fix most every other problem I've had with v5 but this has me stumped. I think there must be some other registry entry that I missed under some other heading. I did the search on Alpha5 (I think) and removed them all, do you have any idea what else could be causing this.

What's odder is that through all of this the runtime has worked fine. I would think there is some file I could copy from the runtime to the full that would make it work??????

                  RE: Eorror on startup

Russ, this has to do with opening Alpha, not an application - right?

is it also true with v5 runtime?

                  and what about v6?

                    RE: Eorror on startup

Well, I fixed it but what a pain.
Alpha needs to do something about this. It seems to happen often enough that there should be a utility to remove the problem registry key. I suspect it's just one or two keys, that's all but we as users have no way of knowing which one. Many or most of the people on this board can work on the registry without problems but there are probably also many that are going to totally screw their computer mucking with the registry. Anyway, this is what I did.

I uninstalled Alpha 5, Alpha 6, and also Alpha 6 beta (that one is a leftover and actually uninstalled ver6, oops)
Then I searched and deleted all registry referenced to alpha5, Alpha Five, Alpha (in programs), and anything else I could find that looked like it might have come from Burlington, MA.

Then ran Symantec windows repair to get rid of some more junk. (this was probably not necessary)

                    then rebooted
Interestingly Alpha 5 Runtime still worked fine. As has been discussed there are no registry entries for this, or at least none that really matter.

I then reinstalled Alpha 5 and A5Doc and ran the update. When I opened A5 it asked for my license number which I entered, but it was still activated. Apparently Alpha does a pretty good job of hiding the activation code.

Anyway it now works again but I wasted 3 or 4 hours to get it going and I should have been doing other things.

As I said before this should not happen and if it does should be easily fixable. I am sure Cian or Selwyn could whip up a utility to fix this in a short amount of time. (I am assuming that they know what causes this)

I am certainly willing to put up with this inconvenience for a product as superior overall as Alpha 5 but if this happens to someone new or using it for the first time I am sure that will be the end of their usage.

                    Pardon my venting.
I hope this message is of use to someone else with this problem in the future.

Thanks Russ. This did help somebody else. In my case, I simply had the customer delete the A5v5 registry folder and that fixed it.

Thankfully, this customer is competent enough to do things like that.
