Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Feedback requested on Possible new Feature

I am trying to find out the level of interest that Alpha Five users would have in a special version of Alpha Five that supported Version Control for Xbasic scripts and functions.

For those of you not familiar with Version Control, it allows you to keep track of all of the changes you make to a script so that at any point you can go back to a previous version. Also, it allows multiple developers to work on an application at the same time because it keeps track of conflicts (when one developer could overwrite a change made by another developer).

At Alpha we use a special version of Alpha Five that supports Version Control (it works with the very popular CVS system - which has the side benefit of being free). Version Control is crucial to us because so much of Alpha Five is written in Xbasic, and we have several developers all working at the same time on V6 and V7 of Alpha Five.

If there is sufficient interest in this feature, and if the price that users are prepared to pay for this feature justifies the effort, we would release a commercial version of the 'Version Control' enabled Alpha Five.

Please let us know if this is a feature that is of interest to you, and what such a feature might be worth to you.

    Hi Selwyn,

That would be a very good feature and useful feature. As far as cost, there is at least one database product that offers this feature as part of the application, no special app needed for the feature.

          Selwyn,

Having worked with a version control product in the past as a VB programmer in a large company where many developers were working on the same project at the same time like your environment, I can appreciate how crucial it is. Now, however, it's just me as a single developer who understands the need to do frequent backups of the system while under development if I head down a rabbit trail and need to backtrack. Unless the business grows and I need to employ other developers to help me, I don't see a need.

Thank you for all that you do.

          Steve

              Hi Selwyn,

I looked at the CVS site and read info and some FAQ's and came to the conclusion that the need for such function isn't necessary for me.

I would be interested. Naturally the less expensive the better - LOL. for both V5 and V6.

It it came with another developer for the price it would be great but as of now it's just me and frequent backups seem to fit the bill.
