Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    RULES FOR NEW ALPHA USERS

I just solved my own problem with regards to linking fields so this is for everyone's general information.

Since starting to use Alpha 5, I have come across certain issues that are not mentioned in the user manual, etc.

For the Beginner - Rule #1
The one mistake I made that drove me crazy when I first started using Alpha (because I was doing everything correctly step by step in the book) was that I found out you can never use a hyphen " - " in a file name (tables, sets, forms, etc). I had used it as a separator in my table/set names to organize my directory. Makes sense but causes alot of grief. Proper method uses either a space or an underscore as separators. That was my first lesson!!

For the Beginner - Rule #2
I had a lot of help with this problem, but I got to the root of it today. When you create tables, you must give every field a unique name. Never use the same description as the first word in a field:

    example 1. field 1: Vendor,
    field 2: Vendor Product

    Keep it simple
    example 2. field 1: Vendor
    field 2: Product

I didn't find anything noted in the manuals anywhere. This will save many hours of frustration when you want to link a set together using a field (ie. Vendor) and want to use all the fields from a child table in an embedded browse.

If you have more than 1 field that has "Vendor" as the first word in the description, as noted in first example above, it will created a hidden link with all fields that start with "vendor". I originally used "Vendor" in both my tables to link each other. What happened on my form when I created an embedded browse was that all my fields in my child table that started with "vendor" (Vendor, Vendor Product) where considered linked files and unusable. I found this out by fluke when I decided to rename my "Vendor Product" field to just "Product". I was finally able to access the "product" field in my embedded browse and the form worked!

I worked on this problem on and off for 2 days, but hey I got it figured out.

Hopefully this will be helpful to other Alpha users who might come across the same problem and not realize these somewhat insignificant but important aspects of the program are not noted in the manuals.

Susan, at the risk of being boringly repetitious, I think both your problems are likely to go away if you simply avoid blank spaces in the table and fieldnames. -- tom

RE: RULES FOR NEW ALPHA USERS

      Hi Tom

Did as you suggested. Just finished removing all blank spaces and replaced with underscores in all my table / field / file names etc. I ran my form after making these changes and I still was not able to access the "vendor product" field in my embedded browse. As soon as I changed the name to "product" only and took vendor out of the equation the hidden link was removed and I was able to access the field for my browse. Now "Vendor" which is my link between the 2 tables is the only field with a key symbol beside it. Yeah!! :0)

      Thanks for your help. Sue

Susan, that's wierd. You may have stumbled into a bug. I suggest you zip the test database and send it to Selwyn or Ed with a text file explaining what you were prevented from doing, simply by the choice of fieldname.

OK, I'll do that by tomorrow. Ran the scenario both ways again and I have no problem duplicating my problem and my solution. So hopefully it can be figured out. I have never corresponded with Selwyn or Ed. Can you give me their email address so I can send the test database.

          Thanks, Sue

            Sue,

Could you perhaps have used windows explorer to duplicate or copy your table files?

If so, you may have omitted the dictionary files which hold the long file names. You could easily do this without knowing so as Alpha rebuilds the dictionary files automatically. However, your long names would be lost.

[email protected] will get to Selwyn. I can only guess that Ed's email is [email protected]

                    Hi Bill

I have used windows explorer to move my inventory folder which contains all my databases and the tuturial to the beginning of my directory root, but when I decided to isolate my problem in a new database called pretest, it was created in the current directory position and has never been moved. Would dictionary files be affected in Pretest????

                      Hi Tom

Could you please refresh my memory on how to zip the database to send ot Selwyn or Ed. I did it once back in June when I sent my database files to Frances and I can't find the page where I wrote all the steps down.

                      Thanks

RE: RULES FOR NEW ALPHA USERS

Susan, I've mentioned this in a number of threads - in fact, so many times that regular readers of this board are probably getting tired of seeing it but here goes again.

I wrote a little "treatise" on naming conventions for A5 and it sounds like you might find it interesting. Here's a link to the page: Cal's Naming Recommendations

I'm also working on an "App Analyzer" that should be available soon. The Analyzer will automatically list all occurrences of all form names, report names, index names, etc. It will also list all occurrences of any other word or phrase you wish to enter. Keep this idea in mind when reading the naming conventions because some of the conventions are designed to make these searches more accurate. For example, imagine what would happen if you were to search for the field named "Vendor" anywhere in your application and also had fields named Vendor_id, Vendor_product, and vendor_name. Then add a few comments about "vendor" and some buttons with the word "vendor" in the button name and/or button text. You can see that very quickly your search for "Vendor" has become only about 90% accurate. In fact, I did one search where the output would have taken 5 pages to print out and there were NO valid hits.

                          Tom,

I am able to duplicate Susan's experience.

The attachment illustrates the problem. I did find that if you design a form and let the genie create a Default Form(contains all of the fields in the Table/Set)", in a one to many set Alpha will generate a suitable browse of the child table.

If you start from a blank form, you cannot create an embedded browse including child fields.

                              Hi Tom

I have sent my database in as well with an explanation. I was using the blank form option to setup my forms.

If you rename (except for the actual vendor field) all your fields in the child table not to include "vendor" everything becomes accessible when using the blank form option.

Is this an anomally, or just my inexperience at using alpha??

                              Thanks Sue
