Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    ui_msg_box - Justify text

    I have the general understanding of the ui_msg_box command. I have been able to introduce multiple line text. Now I am wondering if there is a way of justifying/centering the text within the message box. Or should I be using a different type of dialog box?

    In Version 6 there is a 'use html' option available. Would that do what you need?

        That would be useful when I upgrade, at the moment still using v5

          dim text as c
          text=" Here is some 'centered' text'" + crlf(2)\
          + "Normally your response would be prohibited. Do you wish to continue anyway?" + crlf()
          ui_msg_box("Caution",text,276)
          end

          You have to fiddle with things a bit to get them to display as you want. But the text in a message box can be as much as at least 1,025 characters, I think.

          I have included an image of a message box created by choices a client makes in a complex query.

            Not quite what I was after. I was hoping to have the text "centered" within the box, rather than "left justified" (which is normal state) and what your example shows. Thanks for your input.

              all you have to do is put spaces in front of the text, and fiddle with it.

                    RE: ui_msg_box - Justify text

                    ui_msg_box does not have this level of formatting control to it. You could however create an Xdialog that resembles ui_msg_box and adds the additional formatting you are looking for. A VERY basic example:

                    ui_dlg_box("centered text",""%dlg%
                    {justify=center}This is some centered text;
                    "Ok" "Cancel"
                    %dlg%)

                    -Lenny

                      Were we talking about v6, which I know we're not, one could use ui_html_msg_box() and use any formatting you wanted for the HTML.

                        Or use the PADC function and pad with spaces.

                        eg:
                        text = "Your Centered string"
                        text = PADC(text,40," ")
                        ui_msg_box("Centered",text,UI_OK)

                        regards,
                        Melvin

                            Here's a function to right justify some text. However, it only works with fixed character length fonts, and as such, won't work with ui_msg_box() unless you change your system font to Courier or some other fixed char length string.

                            FUNCTION RJustify AS C ( text AS C )
                            DIM max_len AS N
                            DIM cResult AS C

                            max_len = max_str_length(text, crlf())
                            cResult = *for_each(x, padl(x, max_len, " "), text)

                            RJustify = cResult
                            END FUNCTION
