Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Report Total() Not Working

    Hi All,

    I cannot figure out why my totals for a report group are showing zeroes. While
    Code:
    Calc->Budget
    is the amount to be totaled, I have
    Code:
    Calc->GrpTotal
    on the footer for the group:

    Code:
    Calc->GrpTotal = TOTAL(Calc->Budget, GPR->Total)
    This worked fine when I first converted the report from V1 to V5. For
    Code:
    Calc->Budget
    I replaced the excessively complex calculated fields with a UDF call. While each
    Code:
    Calc->Budget
    shows up fine, the total is zero.

    I tried the same with Alphasports and all worked well. I also noticed that if
    Code:
    Calc->Budget
    were set to a constant (=10,000), the individual records of the detail showed the constant whereas the total was zero.

    Is this a limitation on the part of the Total() function?

    RE: Report Total() Not Working

    Steve, I hope it is something so simple as, if you cut and pasted

    Calc->GrpTotal = TOTAL(Calc->Budget, GPR->Total)

    should be

    Calc->GrpTotal = TOTAL(Calc->Budget, Grp->Total)
    There can be only one.

        Or maybe

        Calc-"GrpTotal = TOTAL(Calc-"Budget, G"b"rp-"Grand"/b")
        There can be only one.

            Stan,

            Actually, it was

            Calc-"GrpTotal = TOTAL(Calc-"Budget, GRP-"Dept)

            where "Dept" is the name of the group. 'Sorry for the slip of the fingers.

              RE: Report Total() Not Working

              Hi Stan,

              I finally got a small application to duplicate this problem with all personal data removed. It is attached.

              On Main_Menu, just press the button. You will notice the "Budgeted Amount" as the rightmost column of the detail having nonzero values. It is based on the calculated field "BUDGETED". The group footer, however, shows a zero total. That is my dilemma which I cannot figure out.

              If it is inadvisable to call UDF's for calculated values, I have not found that addressed anywhere. FYI, the reason I am setting it up that way is because MANY related reports have used the same complicated set of calculated values. Rather than duplicate these from report to report, I would prefer having the calculations done in one location.

              See if you get a zero total. Thanks.

              Steve

                RE: Report Total() Not Working

                I get the zero group total and it seems that the grand total is merely the value of one of the records.

                I know that you can use a function call to obtain a calculated value in a report, as I so this in processing a upc into a barcodable string. We just have to find out what is happening in your function to cause a conflict.

                  RE: Report Total() Not Working

                  There is one peculiarity to mention though I don't think it is the cause of the problem. Namely, when the get_budgeted_amount() function calls the get_long_increase() function it passes a pointer to a table. This seems to work fine when performing individual calls. But the processing of multiple calls resulting from a calculated field using a TOTAL() function may be different.

                  I was also curious about timing issues. But on Alphasports I did similar setup and it worked fine. Then within the newly created function being called from the TOTAL() function I put in a loop (say, 5000 lookups) to slow it down. It still worked fine. So the cause is still a mystery.

                    RE: Report Total() Not Working

                    Stan,

                    I noticed in the documentation what seems to be some vague, subtle hints (or disclaimers) about the limitations of the TOTAL() function.

                    First, the Expression parameter is defined as:

                    Any valid expression that includes a field or a combination of fields from the current table or set that specifies what you want to examine.

                    Also, they add a note at the bottom as follows:

                    NOTE: This function is a report writer function, not intended for table level field rules or other expressions. While the function may perform in some areas outside of the report writer, its use there is not supported.

                    So while these hints may indicate limitations of the function, I will never know unless someone from Alpha responds.

                    Steve

                      Steve,

                      I lobbied Ed for the disclaimer because the total() function depends entirely on the context of "group" and "sub-group". In a report the total() function should work correctly and I fail to see where the udf call should not work as well.

                      Have you experimented with using dbsum() or tablesum() instead of total()? The expression is usually a little more difficult to construct, but the result should be the same.

                            Thanks, Cheryl. Your donated hair did the trick.

                            Stan, using DBSUM() plus some other changes I managed a workaround which works. Specifically, I did the following:

                            1. I added a field named "Budgtd_Amt" to the parent table of the set ("Allocation").
                            2. For the OnRecord event of the detail section I assign this field using the UDF call.
                            3. The "Budget" calculated field now references this new field.
                            4. The "GrpTotal" calculated field now uses DBSUM(). The index/value used here is the same as what defines the group.

                            It is a little awkward to add a field for the purpose of storing temporary calculations but if that is the only workaround so be it. Thanks for your assistance.
