Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Get selected text.

    Hey, y'all--

    I need to get the position and length of the currently selected text in a type-in field. I can get the cursor, but I don't see any way (outside of xDialog) to get the selected text.

    Idears?

    RE: Get selected text.

    Hi Blake,

    I think I am too tired ... what do you mean by 'get' ... where is it that you are trying to get this data from? you say you can get the cursor, where/how are you doing that.

    Are you on a form? If so you can highlight the field in question, right click, select properties, go to the dimensions tab ... This shows the position and size of the field in question.

    If not, please provide us with more details so we can attempt to assist you further.

    Thanks
    Cheryl

      Take a look at CONTROL.TEXTSELECT().

        Ed,

        That seems to permit one to select text, but doesn't seem to tell us how to figure out which part of the text has already been selected. Am I missing something?

          Well, let's see, if memory serves, under windows, free-edit controls (type=ins, memos) have a Selection-Start (selstart) and Selection-Length (sellen) field. Imagine a type-in where you just typed-in "banana". Imagine the underscore is a cursor:

          banana_

          In this case, selstart would be 7 (the cursor position), sellen would be zero, indicating that nothing was selected.

          If you shift-cursored back to select "ana" (imagine everything between the cursor and the asterisk is selected):

          ban_ana*

          Selstart would be 4, sellen would be 3. So, if our type-in were called "fruit", we could (ideally) say:

          start = fruit.selstart
          length = fruit.sellen

          And to set it, we could do this:

          fruit.selstart = 1
          fruit.sellen = 3

          for example, to select the "ban" in banana.

          No banana, as it were, though. To set the cursor position, we have to say:

          fruit.activate()
          Form.Cursor_Set(3)

          (This does not always seem to work, unfortunately. I'm not sure what-all interferes with it.)

          Getting the cursor position is even trickier, since every time the control is activated, alpha moves the cursor (based on settings in the field) so, you hvae to capture it when the field is departed:

          selstart = Form.Cursor_Get()

          You can also substitute the object name or "parentform" for "Form" as far as I can tell.

          And you can select the length:

          fruit.activate()
          fruit.select_text(1, 3)

          But there appears to be no way to GET the selected length.

          I hope that's clearer. And I hope this freakin' HTML comes out.

                I think you will be able to do something with clipboard.set_data().

                It's not immediately apparent to me that you will be able to go directly from the substring of the field. However, you certainly could get the whole field text into a variable, select a substring of the variable, and get this into the clipboard.

                So one way or another it should serve.

                    Bill,

                    Can't really use the clipboard. I literally just need to be able to get-and-set within the field to provide into to the user and to make intelligent replacements, and also to make the selection persistent if the user moves back-and-forth between that field and some other controls.

                    Yeah, I'd sorta gotten the idea that I was going to need to use RTFs, and a little sleight-of-hand to turn it into a memo for editing.

                    Thanx,
