Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Error, could not create temporary file

I have just installed my copy of v5 to my new laptop, running XP, anticipating the upgrade to v6 soon. I then copied my databases on my old machine and pasted them in the new one (except for Alpha Sports which loaded in during the install.) However, all my Alpha databases on the XP, including Alpha Sports, Time & Billing, Contact Manager etc have all stopped working properly. The only thing in common with each error coming up when I try to access a record, or where I can access records try to perform any function on it, is the Error message that it could not create a temporary file.

If I open Alpha Sports and double click the Customer table, it opens the default browse ok. But if I then go over to Forms and click on Customer information it just tells me it could not create a temporary file. Any ideas?

Also, during the installation Alpha installed itself in the lotus directory and not in program files for some reason.

I just made a new database based on the genie for personal contact manager. It made it ok and populated it with sample data. When I tried to make a new form the following error pops up:

    Script: UI_MODELESS_DLG_BOX: line:8
    a5_style_bitmap_draw( bmppreview, stritran(cSylesheet, +SYSTEM_DEFAULT)
    could not create temporary file

RE: Error, could not create temporary file

      Shaun,

I am using Colin's phrase here ... this is just a shot in the dark

A lot of times when I have received the could not create temporary file error ... in any program I was using ... it was because I did not have the hard disk space needed for the program to write what needed to be written.

I do not know how much space that is, but it is certainly worth looking into how much space you have available on your system.

The other thing that I would suggest, since you mentioned the install did not go to the normal default directory ... would be to uninstall it, delete all related Alpha files both on your hard drive and in the registry ... and do a fresh reinstall ... paying CLOSE attn to the install to be sure you install it to the standard default directory.

      Good luck

Did you copy the databases to CD and then use the CD to copy them over to the new Laptop?

RE: Error, could not create temporary file

Thanks for suggestions. There is plenty of space as it is a new PC. I connected them together over a LAN so no I didn't use a cd copier (I cant anyway as my old pc doesn't have one.)

How would I find out how to delete all alpha stuff from the registry?

RE: Error, could not create temporary file

Will using add/remove programs give me a clean removal or will I still need to manually do things in the registry and does Alpha have a help page on what to do?

RE: Error, could not create temporary file

Ok, seem to have fixed the problem. Before doing the uninstall I thought it would be worth a try just moving the program to where it should have been, i.e. in C:\Program Files, and now everything seems to be working fine. Thanks for your comments folks.

                Hi Shaun,

Since moving the files to the default location resolved your issue, my guess is that maybe the program was trying to write to something in that directory that did not exist due to the location of where the program installed. I am glad you were able to resolve the issue without having to uninstall/reinstall.
