Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

          Hi Wanda,

Note: I am told that if you bombard some of the search engines too much, they will turn you off if you are a small size.

I have used Ineedhits.com, but was just prematurely testing and will get more serious later. I am not so sure that is the one for me.

I hope this thread/line/wire takes a good run!

              Wanda,

I would like to warn you.
I use SubmitWolf Pro with an engine-extension, but all it has gotten me is lots and lots of spam !
After a short time, engines are not maintained anymore and half of it gets out of function.
The ones that still do work seem to only sell your emailaddress.
So if you use one of those programms, be sure to set up a special emailaddress with Ultimate Spam Protection.

              Regards,

              Marcel

Hmmm...really good information. Richard has a good article about building your consulting business, and SEO's, "Building Your Alpha Software Consulting Business and Promoting your Web Site...I'm just trying to avoid high costs at this point...since I'm just starting out.

                  One word: GOOGLE

                  The ONLY one that matters.

Make sure your home page title contains your key words and that thos key words are repeated in the home page copy. Then submit your site to google.

                  Cheers

RE: Developers - what SEO's do you use?

                      Wanda,

Two inside tips which now get to be outside tips:

                      1) If you have let us say, your homepage parts of it in blue, insert keywords in blue text in there repeatedly, so nobody will see them, but the spiders will.......
More times the keyword is higher rankings....

                      2) Get educated on "Front Door Technology". Multiple sites referring to eachother. More refers is higher ranking in Google. Search for it on the web and read how it is done.

Both of those options are not elegant but extremely effective.

                      Regards,

                      Marcel

Beware of Marcel's option (1). Google spiders will out you with this very old trick and you could find your site not listed at all. Google has seen all the tricks and the only way up the rankings is a well designed page. Have a look at www.webmasterworld.com for some good advice. The subject is huge!

RE: Developers - what SEO's do you use?

Wow! I went through Google, yesterday, and learned how it automatically lists people, and that it's most important to have links from other sites to my site as often as possible.

I love the blue ink trick!!!!!

I'm also hoping that you are telling me that if I learn "Front Door Technology", then I can make it appear that my site is linked from several other sites?

I have found two local sites that link to me, but none others, so far...

Do you have a preference of which Front Door Technology software is more user friendly?

Thanks so much Marcel, for the now "outsider" tips!

                          Sincerely,
                          Wanda

Wanda, if you haven't already, add yourself to the Alpha website as a consultant (http://www.alphasoftware.com/services/addname.asp). That'll give you another link to your site to help with your Google ranking as well as put your services in front of many potential customers.
