Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    one to many data entry

    Good morning,

    i am having a small problem i cannot seem to figure out.

    i have a form based on a one to many set.

    there is a browse for the child table along with text boxes to show more detail of the child record.

    I have a enter button i want to use to enter new records to the child table.(using the text boxes)The script enters a new record and then sets focus to one of the text boxes.

    It appear to be working fine except once i set focus to the text box I end up changing the first record????? If i enter a field in the browse alls well. But again not what i am looking for.

    The problem is easily duplicated using any default form for a set.
    Thanks for alll the help

    RE: one to many data entry

    Brian,

    You write, "there is a browse for the child table along with text boxes to show more detail of the child record."

    This is the source of your problem. If the embedded browse cannot conveniently hold all the fields which need be visible then you need another approach.

    Here's one:
    -make the browse read only;
    -set the browse's row-doubleclick event to open a form based on the child table (or on another, inverted set);
    -let your users edit the record on this form;
    -when the form closes refresh the original form and its embedded browse.

    The inverted set could be the original child as parent linked to the original parent 1:1 (one-to-one). This would allow the user to view but not edit the fields of the original parent.

      Brian,

      I have fought data entry and data reporting from sets for a long time and think I can do most anything.

      I do not follow what you are trying to do, but think you are trying to have a child on a form and have it show in an imbedded brouse below while the form is base on the set?? Is this correct?

        RE: one to many data entry

        Good Evening,

        Thanks for repyling ,

        Yes, I have a field from the child table displayed in and embedded browse. I have the remaining fields from the child table displayed as text boxes.

        The browse purpose is mainly for navigation, to be able to view all the child records. Say there is 3 entries in the browse. Highlight one and you can view the rest of the fields in text boxes to the right of the browse.

        After I press the enter button It successfully enters the new record in the browse. If I fill the field directly into the browse and then tab to the text boxes to fill out the remaining fields all is well. But I believe this would be unnatural to the user who would want to fill all the information into the text boxes.If I press the enter button a cursor appears in the browse for a new record,if i do not give this field a value and give focus to one of the text boxes the values in the text boxes belong to the first child record so the user if not paying attention would change the first child record not enter a new record.

        Sorry for the short story hope this makes sense.
        Brian

          Lost power as i was aboit to hit send.

          Brian,

          I have a form built on a set that used to call another form called money. Money was on the main table but had calcs from trades whch is a 1 to many.

          Trades had to be on a form imbedded into a form with a browse(like yours) and after all was done, I used a tabbed form that Includes money(main table), vehicle(1 to 1) and trades(one to many).

          Others on here are smarter and work at this full time. They may have a better way, but this is what I had to do to make all work.

            RE: one to many data entry

            Brian,

            What you say confirms my analysis:

            "After I press the enter button It successfully enters the new record in the browse. If I fill the field directly into the browse and then tab to the text boxes to fill out the remaining fields all is well."

            This behavior reflects that the linking key is inserted in the child record when you use the embedded browse"

            "But I believe this would be unnatural to the user who would want to fill all the information into the text boxes."

            Absolutely.

            "If I press the enter button a cursor appears in the browse for a new record,if i do not give this field a value and give focus to one of the text boxes the values in the text boxes belong to the first child record so the user if not paying attention would change the first child record not enter a new record. "

            The child record is not linked to the correct parent record.

            So you need to reconsider your approach as I indicated earlier.

              Thanks for replying Bill

              I went ahead and created a small form for data entry works great. I was just trying to keep things as simple as possible. Thanks again.
