Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Find by key

    guess I didn't ask this right last time.
    While in the form view, when I press the find by key it opens up to search by the Record Number (One of the fields) I would like to change it so that when I click on Find By it opens up to Client ID (another field). I do change it for that time that I'm working on my DB but when I close Alpha then the next time I use it it goes right back to Record Number.
    Thanks for your help

    RE: Find by key

    On one of my forms I use a lookup using cust_id as the index and when I select the find by key in that field it searches by that index. Based on this, perhaps you can try to define this by setting an index for that field. I believe that it pulls the field index as the default find by.

      thanks Cheryl....I was thinking along those lines also but the field index is actually Last Name so you would think it would default to that but it still defaults to Record Number....weird huh?

        RE: Find by key

        I did an 'index' search in the help docs using find by key as my search data.

        The Find by Key action searches for records matching a specified key value using the Find by Key dialog. This action gives you the option to specify the key to search for in advance, or prompt the user at run-time.

        In the How will you specify which key value to go to? field select one of the following values.

        "Specify record key value now"

        "Specify a variable that contains the key value"

        "Specify an expression that evaluates to the key value"

        "Prompt user for key value at run-time"

        If you selected "Specify record key value now", enter a value in the Key Value field.

        If you selected "Specify a variable that contains the key value", select an existing variable for the Variable Name list or enter the name of a variable. In the latter case, you will also have to select the variable's type in the Variable Type list.

        If you selected "Specify an expression that evaluates to the key value", enter an expression into the Expression field. Optionally, click the Expression icon to open the Expression Builder.

          RE: Find by key

          Jim,

          Find by Key will work with whichever index is primary. You can set the primary index for the form using code or action scripting.

          A typical sequence for your button would be:

          1) get the current primary index and store it in a variable
          2) set a different index as primary (choosing one which fits the type of key you want to use for the search)
          3) do the search
          4) re-set the original index as primary

            Jim,

            If you're working with the app yourself, not developing it for another, try this:

            1) use Ctrl-I to pick the desired index for your search
            2) use Ctrl-K to do the find by key
            3) use Ctrl-I to pick the original index (returning the form to it's configuration before the search).

              RE: Find by key

              Like Tom I am not aware of the environment that this search is being done in so I do not know if any of this will assist or not. I have created a 'find by' form for the client to select how he wants to search his records. As an example, there are buttons on the form for: find by last name, find by company name, etc What happens as a result of the button being pushed say for find by last name

              The customer form is opened and the client is prompted to enter a last name to search for. Because of the paramenter settings in the open form action scripting that I selected, the prompt will show the first available last name based on what they have typed to that point. Once they press enter the record matching their selection will be displayed. If there are multiple records that match the last name entered it is sorted by last name, first name, and company and the client can use the pgdn or pgup keys to navigate the choices.

              My settings below will only show exact matches.

              Cheryl

              Using the OnPush event of the different buttons and action scripting I have the following:

              OnPush event of button: Find Customer by Last Name
              Action Scripting
              Open Form or Browse Layout
              Select the appropriate form: f_customer
              Prompt for Parameters at runtime
              Filter: Last name = [Prompt: 'Last_name']
              Order: Last_name+First_name+Company
              Query Options: All Selected Records
              Customize: Title: Last Name (left ok and cancel as is)
              Advanced: High Level

              ************

              xbasic code for above:

              'Open a Form or Browse layout, displaying all, or selected records in the layout.
              filter = " (Last_name = [varC-"prms.Parameter1] )"
              get_parameters_string = ""%string%
              Parameter1|Last_name|Character|Record List-Combo Box||"table_name="customer""\cr\lf"field_name="Last_name""\cr\lf"filter="""\cr\lf

              cancel_label = "&Cancel"
              dialog_title = "Last Name"
