Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Dropdown record list box -- ??

I'm just getting into the product, but sem to have run into a show-stopper -- even though what I am trying to do seems most basic:

I am trying to create a db with two tables:

    Customer table
    Customer_ID (indexed)
    Customer_name

    Activity
    Activity_ID
    Customer_ID
    Start_date
    Description

I have created a one-to-many link between the two tables on the two tables via a 'Customer_ID". I have input some valid test data and just want to create a simple form whereby I select from a non-updateable Dropdown Record List box and then show the associated Activity records for that Customer selected in the Dropdown.

Can this be done? I am having the most difficult time doing this from within the GUI. I can easily accomplish this in Access so I know A5A can do it easily.

    What am I doing wrong?

    Hi Doug,

What is the 'non-updateable Dropdown Record List box' based on? A field in the parent or child table? If it's the parent table, should work. If it's the child table, reverse the set, something you can't do in Access,at least Access 97.

Knowing what you can achieve will not become reality until you imagine and explore.

      In the Parent.

I've tried everything I can think of. This is one of the most basic features of a relational system. It should be obvious by the interface, but it isn't. This is a show-stopper if I can't get this to work, otherwise I am impressed with the tool.

Given the layout I mentioned above, do you know how to create a dropdown showing customer name that causes the 'Browse object' to show only those activities for that customer?

        Is this possible with A5V5?

Two thoughts. The first would be to attach the sample tables and set that you have created to allow us to examine your efforts and offer suggestions. Much easier than trying to describe the steps to create what you want.

          You mention :

dropdown showing customer name that causes the 'Browse object' to show only those activities for that customer?

which is really unnecessary. If you place parent fields on the form and then an embedded browse of fields from the child table, you will only see records related to the current parent record. Navigation through the parent records can be accomplished in various ways.
          There can be only one.

... if you base the form on the set.

              Hi Doug,

I have a form where I use two different lookups. I first lookup the customer from that table and populate all of the customer information field. I then need to lookup all of the auto's associated to only that customer. I do this in my auto_id field using the field rules of that field.

In the field rules for my auto_id I am using a simple lookup, link with the cust_id, and then in the filter I have this expression: Cust_Id=invoice-"cust_id

invoice is the table name ... be sure you have the proper table names in your expression.

              Hope this helps. Good luck.
