Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

copy records with out overwriting existing table

I want to copy marked records from two tables into a third table. For this I am using the copy operation. However, with the code created through the operation, it overwrites existing data in the table I am copying to... So my question is how can I copy the records from the two tables to the single table without overwriting existing records copied previously?? (Everything else is working just fine, except that it overwrites existing records)
The code in the operation that overwrites the data is:

    "if file.exists(copy_db_name) then
    overwrite_result = ui_msg_box("Warning","'"+copy_db_name+"' already exists." + crlf(2) + "Would you like to overwrite it?",UI_INFORMATION_SYMBOL+UI_YES_NO)
    if overwrite_result "" UI_YES_SELECTED then
    end
    end if
    end if "

    Thanks for any insight!

Try an append operation with the all option. That will take all the records from the source table and add them to the target table.

Copy is designed to create a new table.

When I played around with the append operation, it would only allow me to select records from the MASTER table and I need records from the master and another table to be moved, copied or appended. Am I missing something here?

      Thanx

You have, in effect, two master tables so you need two append operations to the target table.

RE: copy records with out overwriting existing tab

          Let me clarify my problem:
I have a form that has been created by using a several tables in a set; however, I am only interested in moving records from two of the tables into yet another table, which is not part of the set. The two tables have in common a "Customer_Number". So customer data from "TABLE A" and product data from "TABLE B" are placed into "TABLE C" which has all of the fields from both of the other two tables.

I have tried using two separate append operations for TABLE A and TABLE B, but am not having success as I don't seem to be able to figure out how to filter the tables separately and mark them. That is, I was filtering on a date that occurs in TABLE B but when I try the separate append operation TABLE A, I do not have anything to filter on except that the CUSTOMER_NUMBER is the same, but can't get it to do what I want????

I tried joining and intersecting tables... that didn't work either. What IS working is the copy operation... if I could get around that little overwrite problem...

Any suggestions as to how the two separate append operations can work with te records having the same customer number if the date in TABLE B is the trigger for filtering and subsequently marking records?

Can you use an intermediate table that is built by the copy and then appended to the target table?

RE: copy records with out overwriting existing tab

This was the perfect solution to this problem. I created a "temp_storage" table which I then copied my marked records from my other two tables into. From there I was easily able to append the "new" records to the permanent "storage" table.

Thank you kindly for your input.
