Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Is this software for me?

I work for a free clinic that offers 5 different services to our patients. We also have a free sample closet of medications. I am looking for a software that we can track patient statistics (visits for each clinic, inhouse scripts, outside scripts, patient assistance scripts, diagnosis, etc.), running inventory of our samples, reports, etc. Basically a full service medical office program that we can design around our 501(C)3 needs. Will this work? Is it complicated to set up? Is it Expensive? Any suggestions?

The software will do what you want.

I'm setting up a system for a mental health clinic that does many of the same tasks that you are looking at.

Your requirements are not to be taken lightly. You can build much of this yourself and you can find help to do the other work when you need it.

    regards.

Al, thanks. I'll pass this on to my director for further investigation and approval to download the free trial.

Sure it will work, but you have to build your own application.

Is it complicated to set up?

Alpha is easy to install. You can learn the basics w/o too much difficulty. But to build a complex application as you seem to be suggesting requires a database background - or lots of trail & error. Alpha is extremely powerful & flexible. There's more to learn than most people could probably hope to accomplish.

          Hazel:

I learned to work with databases on my own. I started in the early 90's using a form developement software. I then switched to a flatfile database called Q&A. It worked great for me. I was interested in learning more about "relational" databases. I heard Foxpro was good. I got it, but it wasn't user friendly. Based on the amount of available time that I had, Foxpro was not an option for me. I then found Alpha's dos database Alpha Four. It's done everything that I wanted it to do, and much more. I still use it today. I've been in the process of making the switch over to Alpha Five for a couple of years. The length in time it's taking me is no indication of Alpha's difficulties in any way, but a matter of available time for me to get it done as my responsibilities are different than they were when I got into Alpha Four and available time to develope is not there for me. That said, Alpha Five is a great product and the possibilities are immense.

As Peter said, you will have to develope everything on your own. Well, you could pay somebody to develope for you. Personally, I think that Alpha Five is the best choice out there. It's ease of use is great and it's very powerful. They're making it easier and easier to use with each upgrade. Once you get past the learning curve, you'll find great features in every nook and cranny.

          Good luck,
          Mike

One thing that I'd like to add to the above; I firmly believe that had I stuck with Foxpro or used MS-Access or Filemaker or any other database product, that I would not have developed applications nearly as productive or powerful as I have been able to develope using Alpha's products, nor in the short amount of time that I was able to develope them in.

That sounds encouraging. I am currently using a Foxpro based software.

                Hazel:

Alpha Five truly is a phenomenal product. Having said that, I wouldn't even think about developing a medical application as your first project. I don't care what anyone else said earlier in this thread, I think it's totally unrealistic to think you can build a professional application first time out on such an important project.

Even though the program is relatively easy to use, as someone else pointed out earlier, the database design techniques and theory are complex and it takes a long time to learn, understand, and absorb those concepts. Even if you're experienced with another program, Alpha Five has so many features that it will take a long time to grasp the power at your fingertips.

I recommend that you hire an experienced developer and work with him/her to see how it's done. But in the long run I think you'll become a great developer if that is your goal.

I must say that I agree with Robert. Let me add that the experience of *attempting* to set up the application yourself will greatly facilitate your dealings with any developer you work with as you will have a deeper understanding of choices such a person will put to you.

Alpha 5 is very powerful and by from the most user-friendly full-featured database but the task before you is not to be underestimated--not learning A5, but creating an elaborate and mission-critical application.
