Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Use of calculated field in calculated fiel

I have two global calculated fields in a set. One calculated
field is used in the other calculated field. this field
works about every 10th time i open the form. all the other
time it stays with the value of the first record.
in what order does alpha execute calculated fields?

    Thanks Willy

    Willy,

"Nesting" calculated fields has been problematic for others. A commonplace recommendation is to restate the expressions without using any other calc field names.

RE: Use of calculated field in calculated fiel

      Hi Tom

I have this global calc expression
      LOOKUP("F:\database\inventory sav\zonesfedex.dbf","between(calc-"Fedexzipset,zip_from,zip_til)","zone")

This Expression works in the expression builder test.

But If I replace the calc-"Fedexzipset with the field
in this expression it comes back with invalid expression.
I can not use any field in the filter expression.

Is there another way around this?

      Thanks Willy

        Willy

Why not post the expression that doesn't work. As Tom accurately points out, using one calculated field within another usually doesn't work since both may run concurrently. The expression you posted seems ok, since it uses an expression for a calculated field within the expression for another. That is the preferred method.

If the expression is part of a script, another method would be to "preprocess" each of the values for each part of the expression. Run the first calculation and put the result into a variable, and then put that variable into the next expression to get the second result.

          Hi Jerry

Here is the expression that does not work

          LOOKUP("F:\database\inventory sav\zonesfedex.dbf","between(Customer-"Fedexzip,zip_from,zip_til)","zone")

As soon as I use any field from the set in the filter
          expression it does not work.

          Thanks Willy

If Customer-"Fedexzip is a calculated field, the expression may fail. Replace the field reference with the expression that is used to fill in that field, and the expression should work.

If that doesn't work, can you post an example using the tables and sets and a little sample data? Seeing the actual process in action (or inaction as the case may be) is sometimes the only way to troubleshoot the problem.

              Hi Jerry

You can reproduce this problem very easy. All you need is
two standalone tables. Setup a global calc field in one
table with the lookup function. You will notice that all
you can use as a filter is calc fields and fields from the lookup table.
Following seems now to work for me:
I setup a global calc for the filter. And than I setup
a field rule with the lookup function and the global calc as the filter. I can use this field in all forms of the set.
So far I have not found any errors. I seems to work!

              Thanks Willy
