Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Calculating Fuel Mileage

I have a table with the following fields: Date, Gallons, Odometer, Fillup, MPG. Fillup is logical, MPG is to be a calculated field. If each entry is a Fillup, the calculation is easy, (ODOMETER-PREVIOUS("Odometer"))/GALLONS.

My problem is when purchasing less than a full tank.
If record #2 is a fillup, and record #3 is not a fillup but just for 5 gallons, then record #4 is a fillup, I need to subtract ODOMETER in record #2 from ODOMETER in #4, and get a total Gallons since the last fillup (record #2 in this example). How can that be written as a formula in a calculated field?

I am a novice, please be explicit with answers. Thank you

    RE: Calculating Fuel Mileage

Hi, Don. I think faced with this sort of problem I'd be inclined to pay my $30 and get one of the Auto shareware products that already does this. 8-)
Seriously though, I can think of a couple of ways to do this and I certainly wouldn't want to steal all the fun from you in getting it to work by supplying all the details! One way might be to define a filter on the fillup table and define an A5 table operation that goes through the file every time it is updated (and when you start up initially) and stores as global variables the odometer readings that you need to perform the calculations. Another way would be to create a summary table and in a similar fasion pick out the values you need to complete the calculations. Hope this helps.

      RE: Calculating Fuel Mileage

Yikes - your so complicated, How about just keeping a running total of cost, gallons, and miles per month. With these three you could get

      miles per gallon

      Miles/Gallons

and also important, cost per mile

      Cost/Miles

Because it depends on what is wanted to calculate from: all fillups to date or just since the last top up. Or perhaps a running average based on the last three top ups. It can get quite complicated and the method I suggested caters for all.

          RE: Calculating Fuel Mileage

Since the user may "fill up" only occasionally, what you're trying to do will have to deal with the possibility that the most recent fill up occurred a long time ago. I daresay that this can't be computed using a single expression. Instead, I think you're looking at writing a custom script to fetch back through the records until you get to a 'fill up', or the beginning of the file. From there you'll have to fetch forward to the current transaction, keeping a running total as you go.

            RE: Calculating Fuel Mileage

Thanks for your input, but I need more precision than that. As I make improvements that may improve the gas mileage (new plugs, wires, etc.) I meed to be able to see if I am getting better mileage.

BTW, I worked through this today in Excel. I can do it in a spreadsheet, so now I know I can do it in Alpha.
