Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A5 will not load database

Been working on custom toolbars. Had one worked out for a menu form. Took out all of the options on the 'window style' tab and the form was fine until focus was transferred to another form and back again. Then the form started to only fill part of the screen. So I restored all the default settings and all was OK. Started to (one at a time) eliminate the options on the 'window' tab of the properties mode for the form....
Took out 'sizeable', 'system menu', 'minimize button' one at a time and everything was still OK... Could even leave A5 and come back -- all was fine..
Then I took out the 'maximize button' and everything was fine until I left A5 and TRIED to come back....
screen would blink but no menu form (which is set to load when db is accessed and set to maximize)...
Tried to load another db and sneak in the back way, but that did not work either... Checked for db on the hard drive and it's OK. Tried to access by clicking on db name but get 'unhandled exception' error or 'wrong file format' error....

Any way to get around the problem????

RE: A5 will not load database

    Hi Richard,

I had this sort of problem, and found that the actual table that a menu was using was corrupted. I had to re-load the menu from a "Copy" DB, to get it working again.

However, create a new blank/empty database and turn off the autoexec script or "Display Startup Form" in View Database Settings" then retry the offending DB.

I am sure "Tom Cone Jr" will come to your rescue when he next logs on. If there is a way of putting this right for you, he will know the answer, that's for sure.

If not, then try sending an Email to Arron or Selwyn at Alpha, as they will have come across this before, I am sure.

    Regards
    Leslie.

When you open your database, hold down the left "ctrl" and "shift" keys. A dialog will ask you if you want to open your startup form or run the autoexec script. This should allow you to open the database and, hopefully, repair the offending table.

Where did I miss that..... thanx a bunch..
I was getting ready to 'import' the db into another and start over...
Got the control panel back again and will fix the form....
Think I'll put an 8x12 sign on the wall with this 'fix' so I will NEVER forget again...

        Again thanx much

All is well, BUT (in my favorite 2-yr-old tone of voice)WHY would turning off the 'maximize' button make that much difference??????

If there is an explanation, I really would like to hear it and I don't mean that sarcastically. I'm serious! Would like to find out what caused the problem and why....
          Hoping for answers.......
