Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    copy from child to child

Trying to figure this stuff out. Sample attached.

Step 1. goto record 2 of header (Zinger Zanger Company)
Step 2. select "create shipment button"

    desired results:
each item in first browse (order_browse) is duplicated to second browse (ship_browse)

I broke down the code into 2 segments. The first segment correctly counts the number of items in the Order_browse (4).

I would like the second segment to then create each item in the second browse, but it only repeats the first item 4 times (Zoomer zoom zooms).

I'm guessing it's got something to do with object focus but can't figure it out. (To keep testing I either manually delete the ship_browse each time, or use "del 421" in operations.)

I am learning though trial and error, reading the manuals, researching the forum, and posting to the forum. There may be a better way than what I am attempting, but I would first like to learn the "how and why" of what I am trying, then learn alternatives.

Also, I find the debug, trace, and code editor very confusing. Any documentation to help clear up confusion?

RE: copy from child to child

    Geoff,

Your script is failing because you aren't moving the record pointer in the order_items table after each time you save a new record to the order_ship table.

Your script mixes xbasic commands that manipulate table field objects on the form with commands that manipulate the underlying table(s) directly. I recommend that you never do this. Instead, your script should either work with form objects, or with the underlying tables, never both in the same script.

The attachment illustrates one way your script could be modified to copy all linked records from one child table to another.

    hope it helps.

      Thanks, Tom.
It'll be a couple days (small trip) before I can test your recommendations. You're responses to my problems are helping me in the learning curve and are very much appreciated. Thanks to all in the forum.
      More suggestions always help.

What about using action scripting to run an append operation that does append the same item twice?

          Al,

If "that does append the same item twice"

          is really supposed to read:

"that does NOT append the same item twice"

          I think you've got a better mousetrap.

One quick question after having looked at your saved append operation. I can't see where the specifications for the append limit the range of operation in the transaction table to specific linked child table records in the Order_Items table. Surely, I've missed something, but can't see it. Why doesn't your saved append operation append copies of all records in the Order_items table?

            What me mistypeee///??

The portion that keeps the append operation to only the order that is currently showing is the action scripting option to filter only records that match an object on the existing form.

Al, thanks! I was looking for it in the specs for the saved op, and it's in the script that calls the op. My bad.

BTW, how did you create the PNG formatted graphic image? I have no experience with PNG files, but they seem to be popping up everywhere these days.

I paste into paint from a prt sc button. On XP, paint has an option to save as a .png

It's a much smaller image, but very high resolution. I haven't heard any complaints from the message board, so either it's usable or no one is looking at them.

As far as the app example, I'd do a few more things to tighten it up, but the major portion of the work is in the example, plus it does answer the question that was originally posed.

So how's it in Florida? If we haven't had enough lately with rain, a earthquake hit this morning at 1:11am - centered 70 west of Chicago. go figure....

Maybe that'll shake up some of the bits and bytes and make computers work better......
