Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    transfer aplication changes from laptop

I have a working program in my office. recently I needed to make changes to a table and related forms. While my office continued using the program I made the changes on my laptop. Now I had an application on my laptop with outdated data and an outdated app with up to date data on the desktop.

I tried backing up data only from the desktop and restore on laptop. I tried backing up the non data files from the lap top and restore on desktop. neither gave me the new data with new application structure.

Either should have worked in principle. The implementation might have been flawed. How, exactly, did you do it ?

      Alan,

I'm sorry, I responded too quickly. Please disregard the previous it's flat wrong.

Since your mods included table structure changes you can't move the data from the pc to the laptop by simply copying in the files. (that's what happens with a restore) If you do, you get the old table structures overwriting the new ones. You'd have to zap your laptop tables and then import the data from the pc if you were trying to create a current app on the laptop.

Going the other way copying (restoring) the non-data files does not change the table structures on the pc since the table structures are part of the DBF data files themselves.

        Alan:

It sounds like you changed the file structure on the lap top. If so:

1 - Make a new directory on you lpa top.
2 - copy the entire application from the office directory into this new directory.
4 - backup the old system on your lap top. Back up the old system at the office.
4 - Lap top old system - only change the file structres to meet changes in the new system.

5 - Lap top Old system - Copy all other changes to the Old system from the new system on you lap top and test.

6 - Lap top - You should have a fully updated Old System at this point.

7 - You can now update the system at the office.

Steps 1 - 7 will work if there have been no updates to the dbf files at the office by the time you finish.

You will have to cooridnate this process very carefully.

        I hope this helps.

RE: transfer aplication changes from laptop

          Alan

          Good morning!

When changing the structure of an existing application, I use the table.add_field() command on my development machine as a script or a button on a limited use form. Then all I have to do is move the structure files over to the production machine and run the command to add the fields.

You can still do that in your case. Just make a button or a script in your development machine. I like to run it in both environments just as a matter of good practice. I havn't maid a typo eror since hte last onne. ;-)

          TABLE.ADD_FIELDS()

          Syntax

          TABLE.ADD_FIELDS( Table_Name as C, Field_List as C )

          Argument
          Description

          Table_Name
          The name of the table.

          Field_List
A CR-LF delimited string containing the name and definition of each new field to be added. Each field in FIELD_list is specified in the format: Fieldname, type, width, decimal_places. The field types, the single character codes used to represent them, and the valid parameters associated with them are:

          Field Type
          Type Code
          Valid Parameters

          Character
          "C"
          Fieldname, Field Type, Width

          Numeric
          "N"
Fieldname, Field Type, Width [, Decimal Width]

          Date
          "D"
          Fieldname, Field Type

          Logical
          "L"
          Fieldname, Field Type

          Memo
          "M"
          Fieldname, Field Type

          Rich text memo
          "R"
          Fieldname, Field Type

          Bitmap
          "B"
          Fieldname, Field Type

          OLE
          "O"
          Fieldname, Field Type

          Linked image
          "I"
          Fieldname, Field Type

          Description

The TABLE.ADD_FIELDS() method adds new fields to an existing table. If Field_List contains a field name that is not unique, then the field name is adjusted so that it is unique. E.g. "name" becomes "name1" etc.

All of the existing data in Table_Name is preserved when the new fields are added.

          Example

This script adds several new fields to an existing table.

          fields = ""%str%

          Product,c,20

          Price,n,10,2

          Notes,m

          %str%

          table.add_fields("table1", fields)
