Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Repeating Detail In Report

I have never really had any problems reating reports and for the most part still don't. I am sure the information below is not going to eb enough but did not want to put anyone to sleep if this is a simple thing.

That said, I have a report that is based on a set that the detail keeps repeating the same information, There are three tables in the set and the fields on the report are not all in one table. I am trying to print a name and phone number from one (parent) table; an insurance policy number, renewal date and premium from another table (child). The parent table has a unique household number and that same number is in the child table which contains the policy number and related information.

The report is grouped by a field in the parent table but not the household number but rather the agent assigned to the household. The agent number is not in the policy table; only the parent table. The group page breaks properly but in the detail section it repeats the insured's name multiple times in a method I cannot determine.

    Any ideas PLEASE???????????????

    RE: Repeating Detail In Report

I THINK the problem may be that the client has multiple policies and the phone number prints the same number of times as policies held by the client.
You may need to rethink your table relationships to get this to work correctly. Others may be able to give more speciic information

    Good luck
    Jim

when you drop the fields into the report in design mode, A5 asks if you want the data repeated or not...or am I not understanding the problem.

This might have happened if you used the genie to create the report. Try from the report design mode instead.

        Bob,

Check the number of child table field repetitions for a given household. Is it the same as the number of linked grandchild table records for that household?

          RE: Repeating Detail In Report

Yes, it is Tom. The number of repeats is always equal to the number of records in the grandchild table

There is a grandchild table with information related to the drivers.

          The setup is

parent- Household information (unique household number)

child- insurance policy information (unique policy number and household number for the one to many)

grandchild- driver information that lists all drivers on a given policy in the child table. (linked by policy number)

          Suggestions?

            RE: Repeating Detail In Report

I suggest you create another group (name) and then put that field in the group header rather than the detail section.

              RE: Repeating Detail In Report

If Arlen's suggestion does not work for you, you may want to try the old "Extract, sort and report".

The idea is to create a temporary table with X-Basic and copy the info from the appropriate tables into one flat file. Then sort the flat file in the report details.

This is a bit of work to set up, but often it is the best way to get complex info from a set.

Remember to zap the temporary table each time before you fill it.

              Regards,

                Thanks.

This did the trick. I had thought about it but it just seemed to simple to do, so I passed it by.

                  Bob,

If you're curious about the behavior you saw read the sections of the User Guide on building reports using one to many sets. One to many sets will exhibit this behavior if you drop a parent field into a details band displaying child table field values. -- tom

                    Thanks Tom.

So far his suggestion is working, at least for the report types that I need. I guess it is a learning process overall, but I am running as fast as I can, or so it seems.
