Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

        Hi Bjorn,

Welcome to the forum and nice to have a new Alpha Five database builder among us. The family is growing.

Please tell us some more about your background. Doesn't matter how bad your English is, try it.

RE: Hi, Im new, just wanted to say hello

          Thanks

I have been a computeruser since the day of Commodore 64 with a 300 baud modem:-) Still remember the first phonebill
I got after using that modem. It was huge!
          Nowadays Im thankfully on ADSL.
          Havent much programming experience.

Beside this forum as mentioned earlier,
I chosed Alpha Five because it has a right mix of easy and advanced funcions. And you can make runtime version and distribute the database freely.
So therefore I also bought the Alpha Five Runtime.

Im co-chairman of the board where I live. It concist of two houses and a total of 110 apartments
So one of my first projects will be to automate some of the office-functions.
I see this as a great learning experience and hopefully in the end I will save some of the time I use in my sparetime as a co-chairman.

Just to clarify I bought AlphaFive and Runtime out of my
own pocket, just in case some residents read this:-)

          Regards
          Bjorn

RE: Hi, Im new, just wanted to say hello

We did search for readymade software that could help us. But we didnt find any software that fitted in with our needs.

So a custom database was the only solution to go for.

Your English is much better than my Norwegian. Now, you can judge how good my English is at Alpha Five Help, which contains the latest and most complete versions of all Alpha Five documentation.

I have this bad habit of butting everywhere. But welcome. I do hope you enjoy alpha as much as we do. I am sure with your background in programming it will be a piece of cake for you in alpha.

                  Hi Bjorn:

I am also new to Alpha Five. I am attempting to rewrite an apartment management system that I originally wrote in TRS80 Basic. We use our current (TRS80) system to keep track of who occupies each unit, what money they have paid and what they owe. It produces the typical reports for this kind of application such as the rent roll, the late report, vacancy report, bank deposit report, etc. It also prints form letters and does utility billing.

We're presently operating more than 1,700 units, and we need to convert all of our software to the Windows environment. I looked at commercial applications, and they were too expensive and lacked some of our functions. I attempted to rewrite it in Access, but Access was too difficult. I'm making better progress with Alpha Five, and I hope to have something running by this fall. If you are interested, send me an email in about 90 days.

Dick and the rest of us Alpha'ers,

The greatest benefit that I've found to using Alpha's products is that they allow me to do some pretty powerful stuff without programming. Also, instead of going with some "canned" software, I can develope the software to work around the bussiness practices that works best for us, instead of designing our practices around what the software will let us do.

                    Good luck,
                    Mike
                    Thank you,
