Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Populate Xdialog Box from Table

I would like to fill an Xdialog box drop down list with a couple of columns (one numeric and one text) from a table then use the selected result as a filter for filling another Xdialog box drop down list with columns from a second table.

Can this be done without resorting to XBasic?

My searches so far have yielded nothing.

    John,

Have you created one dialog box with the data you want? You should be able to use the data as a filter for the second dialog box.

Many moons ago on this forum Cal Locklin posted a very good example of a multi dialog box where the data in one box became a filter for data in another box but all within one screen. It is worth searching for.

RE: Populate Xdialog Box from Table

        Hi John,

You can populate an Xdialog box with data from a table, but NOT if the data is numeric.
As far as I know you can only list data of the Character type.

        Regards,

        Marcel

Actually, you can populate a list box with numeric fields. The easiest is to use the Record List-List box which will create a keylist that can use any type of field, including dates, numbers, etc

Attached is a text file with 2 scripts. One is done all in action scripting and one was created in xbasic using the xdialog genie and editing. Both do about what you describe. To test them, do the following

            1. Save the attached file in any folder
            2. Open the Alpha Sports sample database
            3. Go to the code tab and select import
            4. Select the attached file and import both scripts
            5. Now you can run the scripts and see the code

              Thanks for the help!

Even though my variables should be numeric, once I used the record list list box it worked ok and so did the filtering.

Except that is for one issue: when the user looks up the data for selection into the dialog boxes they see 2 columns - an ID No column and a Details column. I can store the ID No for writing to the browse later but it looks like I cannot store the corresponding Details as well. I do not want a second drop down box on the dialog box for the details since selecting the ID No should also select the details. Or do I need to resort to amending the code for this?

Onh your keylist, you can specify an expression instead of a single field as the return value. For example, in the examples I sent, instead of returning using "invoice_no" as the return, you could use the expression

                Invoice_Number + "|"+Product_Id

to fill the value of the variable V1. Then to get the invoice number only, this would work

                inv_no = substr(Var-"v1,1,at("|",Var-"v1)-1)

to get the value for product_id this would work

                prod_id = substr(Var-"v1,at("|",Var-"v1)+1)

I used the pipe character | as the delimiter between the vlaues, but you could use almost any character. The pipe is unlikely to be found in any data, so it is a good choice.
