Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Importing CSV files

    I need to import CSV files on a regular basis. I prefer using an Operation in the Control Panel but import does not support CSV apparently. It seems like it should but doesn't. Now, I understand that I can simply rename the CSV file to TXT and accomplish this but it's one more step and I expect a flurry of CSV files since this is the only option this financial institution provides for a file download.

    If anyone has an insight into this let me know. I did do a search and it turned up only one hit. Hmmmm.

    Anyone know what Quicken or Money files are made up of? Anyone ever try to import them?

    RE: Importing CSV files

    If you have excel, I posted a function in the code archive, that my client uses frequently to silently and automatically convert a csv file to an excel version 4 file and then import it.

    but unless the csv's are reliably static, be sure you import to a "new" table instead of an existing table!

      Do you mean the file selection dialog doesn't display csv as a choice? Just type in the file name with the extension that you need.

      It seems like it should but doesn't.

      [i]What does that mean exactly?[i]

      Refer to response 1.

          They are reliably and absolutely static. However I have no guarantees that the clients would have Excel.

            I'm going to build an OPERATION and open the CREATE NEW OPERATION tab. I select IMPORT RECORDS and CREATE either using Genie or manually. My options for import of the file type is ASCII, Excel, or 1-2-3. I would expect selecting ASCII would have CSV but it only has:*.asc, *.txt, and *.dat.

            NO CSV.

              You are not limited to the choices of asc, txt, and dat. Those are just the ones presented. Type *.csv to see any files with csv, or just type the name and extension. If you are going to be presenting a file choice to the user, you can build one in xdialog that only presents csv files.

              NO CSV.

              Have you tried typing in the file name and extension?

                RE: Importing CSV files

                Ah, ha. I have found the solution. It's just that the TYPE wasn't there and something you said gave me a hint.

                I just needed to give the filename extension explicitly.

                Thanks for your help!

                  I sent my post before I read your response. Ooops. That's exactly what I did. I assumed that since *.CSV was not offered it was not possible. Course it would be nice if that was one of the options--as a reminder--and to allow you to browse to the specific file/path. Or even a *.* would be nice.

                  But I'm okay with this! Thanks again.

                    RE: Importing CSV files

                    Dennis,

                    I have been using "ui_get_file" that can be customized to display any file extension you want, see below.

                    prmpt_title = "Select the File Name to Process"
                    prmpt_filter = "CSV(*.csv)"
                    prmpt_default = ""
                    DIM SHARED input_file AS C

                    input_file = ui_get_file(\
                    A5_eval_expression(prmpt_title),\
                    prmpt_filter,prmpt_default,"X")

                    I then added a script, (that was built from the import operation) to this that performs the import operation.

                    At first I was lost - but by using action scpripts and looking at the code generated by the operation - I have simplified this recurring operation quite nicely.
