Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Bound and unbound controls

I haven't finished walking through all the docs - although I am far along - and I still am not seeing a way to deal with unbound v.s. bound controls on a form.

If I have a table of People, and a table of Transactions associated with the people, I simply want a pull down at the top of a form with the People, and when I choose one, I then want to display below in a grid/browse all the transactions for that person. All my attempts to date lead to the People pulldown trying to modify the current record.

Can someone point me at a section in the docs going over this? [feeling very stupid about now] Thanks.

    RE: Bound and unbound controls

    Hi Frank,

There are a number of ways to do this:

    Option 1. The quick-and-dirty example.
Make a set, based on your people table, that links the two tables on your chosen fields. Then in the Control Panel, right click the set and make a default form. Open the form in the form editor and select the browse tool on the toolbox. Drag out a box on your form to add an embedded browse. Make sure it is at the parent level and add the fields you want. Save the form and go to Form View.

You will then be able to click records in the embedded browse and that will jump you straight to the appropriate People rec. The browse at the bottom will show you their transactions.

    Option 2.
Download and/or run some of Jim Chapman's excellent Turbo demo examples in the learning center on Alpha's web page...
    http://alphasoftware.com/support/tech/alpha5/learningcenter.asp
If I recall correctly, open filtered browse will point you in the right direction. Here's the download url. Note that the link will lead you through installing java if you don't already have it.

    Option 3. True unbound controls.
You can build pretty much what ever you want in XDialog but it takes a little learning. Unfortunately you can't put XDialog controls on standard forms.

Finally, I dare say client-server will add fucntionality in this area when it is released.

    Regards,
    Trevor

      Thank you.

I had achieved Option 1 - but it doesn't achieve it with
      pull downs.

I'll go download those examples. Thanks again.

I'm not sure, but I seem to remember Selwyn saying or demonstrating (at the A5 conference) that v.6 will allow xdialog to be dropped or inserted into standard forms?

The particular tutorial you cited does not actually address this, but the app in the tutorial does. Can someone point me towards the source of the database in the tutorial? Thank you.

              RE: Bound and unbound controls

              Hello Frank,

""and I still am not seeing a way to deal with unbound v.s. bound controls on a form. ""

In Alpha Five a form is bound to an underlying table and all controls on the form are bound to something, usually a field in the underlying table. However a variable placed on the form in essence becomes an 'unbound' control. If you place a variable on your form, then go into the properties of that control (right click - properties), and set the control up as a record list-list box, or a record list-combo box, then go to the Choices tab of the properties and connect it to the appropriate table, now you can select a given record from the desired table. Then using this control's OnChange event, you could filter the browse to show only records relating to the selected record.

              Good luck,
              Jim
