Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Saving Report as File

    Hi
I would like to save a report output as a file. Then be able to open this file and view the report.
The HTML, PDF, RTF, & Text Drivers under printers sends these files to LPT1 (printer Port).
I can not e-mail a report to myself because that also dosen't work either. I have MSN. MSN works with outlook express.
Any suggestion on fixing these problems.

    Thanks Joe

    RE: Saving Report as File

    I don't understand the question/problem.

You can save a report to a file through action scripting, xbasic (reportname.saveas(), or simply right click on the report in the control panel and choose "save as.."

"The HTML, PDF, RTF, & Text Drivers under printers sends these files to LPT1 (printer Port)." - You cannot use these drivers directly as "print to" devices or select them as valid printers.
    There can be only one.

      RE: Saving Report as File

I have at databse which has a report. I want to e-mail the results of a run report to someone. The e-mail will not work. So I want to save the results of a run report as a PDF and then attach that file in a e-mail. Alpah V5 also will not save the file - it actually does nothing.

The output or results of the run report will not save at all, not PDF, not HTML, not RTF, not TXT.

The only thing I can do is print the results of a report. The printed report works fine.

How do I send it to someone else? electronically.

      Thank You
      Joe

Alpha 5's email function requires SMTP mail server, of which MSN & AOL are not. Almost all other email servers are. Since MSN & AOL won't share their technology, you should consider getting an email account through a email server that provides SMTP.

How are you attempting your report saves? I had no problem running a report preview and doing a "save as" as Stan suggested. The attached PDF is a product list from AlphaSports.

I was a little foggy on the correct syntax earlier.

            report.SaveAs("reportname","PDF","","","C:\temp\test",.t.)

will save the report "reportname" as pdf to the name test in the c:\temp directory.

              HI
Yes your saved report --- The attached PDF is a product list from AlphaSports.----- Thats what I want. My program will not do this. When I run the preview and try to save as the box gives me this destination C:\Alpha5v5\A5V5\Samples\AlphaSports\CustomerList.pdf BUT it never saves a file. I tried a find on the whole computer and the file does not exsist.

              I tried them all
              C:\Alpha5v5\A5V5\Samples\AlphaSports\CustomerList.pdf
              C:\Alpha5v5\A5V5\Samples\AlphaSports\CustomerList.htm
              C:\Alpha5v5\A5V5\Samples\AlphaSports\CustomerList.rtf
              C:\Alpha5v5\A5V5\Samples\AlphaSports\CustomerList.txt

BUT NOTHING happens. no such saving.

                RE: Saving Report as File

If you are saving the report using the standard File pulldown menu you should selct the archive function. This will save the report in PDF format. The defaul location is the "Archive" sub-directory of the database directory.

I have several apps which give the option to save a file as a PDF (all built using Acgtion Scripting) and they work perfectly. All save to the "Archive" sub-directory of the database directory.

Can't duplicate the problem, you might try re-installing.

Re-installing Alpha should not overwrite files you created, only application files. Always best to back up your work first, of course.

                        Help
I did uninstall - then reboot -- then reinstall - everything went fine - then ran update patch - everything exactly as before - including same on going problem.

I see in the preview of cutomer list report there is icon for save in acrobat.pdf format. This does nothing.

I see in manual talk about script genie I can find no such genie. I get the other genie for print.

If I select file - dropdown - Archive - Note box is returned saying "The layout has NOT been archived"

I can not fine any method for doing this layout archive ?
This is a reinstall of Alpha 5 in windows 98. Help ?

                        Thank You
