Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    fetch_find

    Some help please with syntax of tbl.fetch_find(). I have a file named people (with 10 entries). It consists of 2 fields. 1 field=ID, the other field=Name. I would like to display the record with the Name = "John". As simply as possible how would I find it using fetch_find?

    RE: fetch_find

    dim tbl_people as P
    dim indx_1 as P

    tbl_people = table.open("people.dbf")
    indx_1 = tbl_people.index_primary_put("name")
    rec = tbl_people.fetch_find("John")

    assuming you have an index on the name field in the people table, index tag named "name"
    There can be only one.

      RE: fetch_find

      You should define an index "Name" on the Name field.

      When you have done that, you can use a script such as

      t=table.open("people")
      t.index_primary_put("Name")
      frec = t.fetch_find("John")
      if frec " 0 then
      ui_msg_box("","No John in the table.")
      end
      end if
      t.close()

      You can simplify this slightly by using

      t=table.open("people")
      t.order("Name")
      frec = t.fetch_find("John")
      if frec " 0 then
      ui_msg_box("","No John in the table.")
      end
      end if
      t.close()

      which would work even if you did not have an index on the "Name" field.

      If the code is being used in a form or set based on the table (as parent in a set) you don't need table.open, you can use

      t=table.current()
      t.order("Name")
      frec = t.fetch_find("John")
      if frec " 0 then
      ui_msg_box("","No John in the table.")
      end
      end if
      topparent.resynch()

      which should then show the record found in the form.

          What can I say? When you've got it, flaunt it.

          I should have figured that Stan was ready with a solution too. I think between us, all that can be said about fetch_find has been said.

            Except...

            "tbl".fetch_find() works the same as the

            "Find By Key" sequence in the menu of every Default Form.

            This can be handy to use when troubleshooting fetch_finds that aren't working as you think they should.

              RE: fetch_find

              Thanks for the help. Tried the code as suggested and I still have some problems. What I intend to do is:

              (1) enter a variable field "m_ID"
              (2) find the record by using "m_ID" to find "ID" (table index set to "ID")
              (3) display the found record.

              Originally using action scripting "On Arrive" I set the index of the table to "ID". "On Depart" I selected "Find by Key", "specify a variable", variable name = "m_ID". It would not consistently give me the desired results.

              I then tried the xbasic code as suggested. It finds and displays the records as desired if I depart the field using the mouse. If I depart the field via the "Enter" key or "tab" key, the next sequential record is displayed. For example if I enter "12345" and depart via mouse, record 12345 is displayed, if I enter "12345" and depart via the enter or tab key, "12346" is displayed.

              Now I will return to xbasic to test the mouse vs. tab vs. enter.

              Why is there a difference and how can it be corrected?
