Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

web component Genies in the v6 Beta

For those of you who were at the conference, you saw one of the key capabilities of v6 -- ie the ability to quickly build web database apps without having to write xbasic!

These web components genies are now starting to be included in the v6 beta (more to come :))

If you want to get the v6 beta please email your request to [email protected] with a brief sentence or two about yourself and your involvement with Alpha Five.
    thanks.

    Richard
A5V6/A6V1 are very exciting products...they will move AlphaSoftware into the real world and the "big boys" league...I have three questions.

1 - Could you please display version numbers and the release date on the beta download site.
2 - How do we convince ISP's to start installing WAS.
3 - Has anyone at Alpha got any suggestions on how to overcome MySQL's lack of encryption when used with A5V6/A6V1.

I hope you are not having too many late nights deciding how best to price A5V6/A6V1...users/sites/cpus/unrestricted...I hope you get it right and hit the competition where it hurts most and gain the market share you deserve.
    Keep on punching those keys

I have sent this comment to Selwyn and Lenny.

2 - How do we convince ISP's to start installing WAS.

we will have support for hosting at ISP's built into the into the intial release with genie to automate this. We are planning to get extensive publicity for a5 v6 and this should generate increased awareness and that is what drives ISP interest.
3 - Has anyone at Alpha got any suggestions on how to overcome MySQL's lack of encryption when used with A5V6/A6V1. I will talk to Lenny and Kurt re this Tony.

          Hello Richard,

Having seen the Web Component Builder demonstrated at the conference, I believe that this is an absolutely astounding tool. What I am afraid of is that many will not realize the breadth and scope of this tools capabilities. I am not a web site developer, but I would think that Alpha Five v6 should find its way into the toolboxes of web layout design folks as well as us database types. To see the way Xdialog, Xbasic, HTML, and JavaScript are blending and working together is very exciting.

Cant wait for the release date!

          Thanks,
          Jim

RE: web component Genies in the v6 Beta

Jim and Richard, for various reasons I didn't get to make it to the conference this year. In the WAS, especially if there is a version for version5V6 that is different from version6V1, can you design a form using the traditional tools, (design normally - not in xdialog,) and then "convert" the form for the WAS, or will it be based more or less exclusively on xdialog created forms?

                Martin

The WAS is a very different concept than traditional form based programs. All of the "forms" are just HTML pages. The component builder allows creating "form" elements like text boxes, browse like grids, buttons etc with tools that appear similar to current methods and thinking. The current version of the component builder allows validation of data, reacting to some actions, and some formatting rules. The program has a HTML editor that allows building a web page. You can then add the elements built in the component builder to the page to complete the page form. The end result is HTML code that creates a page that populates with selected data when run in a browser.

There is currently no method to convert an existing form, including xdialog, to a HTML format. However, it looks like the builder is just as easy or easier to use than the xdialog genie.

Lenny my apologies for saying A6V1 earlier
                  Should I have said A6CS?

                        Jerry, thanks.

That is basically good news to me. I would rather remain an xbasic junkie and add HTML to my tools than have to also become an xdialog junkie. Do you remember how much hair that guy went through in making that calendar program?!!

Just a note -- for those of you using the beta, it is worth
downloading incremental builds (same url) often -- since
                          new capabilities are included frequently
