Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Drag Drop

Is it possible to create any kind of Drag&Drop functionality with A5? I need to allow a user to drag one control onto another and for the target control to react to this as an event. Possible? Thank you,

    Warren Shore

    RE: Drag Drop

    Warren,

    No, I don't think so.

Vers 6, not yet released, will be supporting ActiveX controls more fully. Perhaps that will permit you to use a 3rd party tool to add this kind of functionality.

      Tom:

Thanks for taking the time to answer. I thought V6 was to be rolled out this past week-end, full feature-list, all that. Guess not. Thanks again,

        RE: Drag Drop

        Hi Warren

I have wondered about this and decided to play with it, coming with something that might work or you.

I created two hotspots on a form.

First hotspot had an event for "on push". Set a value for a variable).

Second hotspot had a flyover event. Inserted the value into another field. This could just as easily play a script.

So I clicked on the first hot spot and dragged my pointer to the second hotspot released the mouse button.

Don't know enough about what you want to accomplish but this might give you an avenue to explore/experiment with to give you the results you want.

          Hi Robert:

Thanks for taking the time. It gets me about 80% home. I'll see what I can do.

Amazing, for the most part, A5v5 is only limited by one's imagination. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to attend the conference this year so it's very difficult to imagine what v6 will be like.

Has anyone found more than 24 hours in a day?

            Still looking for summer.

Knowing what you can achieve will not become reality until you imagine and explore.

Well, sort of. Drag 'n' drop is a lot more complex topic than it might at first glance appear.

The kind of DnD Warren is asking about is internal to a program. The drag begins on one control in a program and ends on a different control of the same program, often the same window. In theory, the Alpha dev team could allow that just by exposing certain Windows messages. In practice, coming up with a system that would be both easy and powerful enough would be a bit more work.

This is different than the sort of DnD that would occur between two Alpha 5 programs, i.e., two apps running in two separate A5 sessions.

It's still a different kind of DnD that occurs when you drop an object from the desktop. And, at one point, that was different from the kind of DnD you'd get from an ActiveX control.

I'm far from an ActiveX expert, but every time I've seen an ActiveX control used, its Drag-Drop events were mapped to the internal systems' drag-drop mechanism. It might be tricky to handle the event, in other words, even if you do find a control that will generate it!

In any case, it's going to be very limited, or you'd eventually be swapping out all your A5 controls for ActiveX. Heh.
