Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Birthday Reports

I have a large database from which I generate a birthday report each month, for the month. I would like to simplify the process for my secretary. The way I do it now is to go to the report, then to Design"Detail Properties"Filter Expression. In the Filter Expression is the following (for the month of June): SUBSTR( BIRTH ,1 ,2 )="06" The fieldname BIRTH is a Character String (10 characters). Example: 06/14/1946. I suppose one way to accomplish the task would be to first run a query for the desired month (example 06)and then have the database sorted by the BIRTH field in ascending order, remove the filter from the Report form and it would print only June birthdays, in ascending order. That, however, does not seem much less complicated unless there is a way to create a button that asks, "What month do you desire for birthdays?" Or, something like that.

Perhaps someone has a way to accomplish what I would like to do. Thanks.

Take a look at ASK variables

      RE: Birthday Reports

Why not have the report ask for the month?

In many of our reports, we set a calculated field to be something like this:

      RDT VAR-"ASKD_HEARINGS_DATE

This will ask the user for a date. It is returned as a character field.
Next, in the report-"properties-"Detail properties, filter, we have the following:

      HEARDTL-"HDT=CALC-"RDT

What this says is that any record in heardtl with a date = rdt will be taken.

Your situation is a little different in that you want all records in a month to be selected. No problem.

      filter should be:

      month(birthday) = month(calc-"rdt)

This is figuring that both fields are in date format.

If not, they must be converted to date format.

if the fields are in the format of "04/01/2004",

      then the expression is

      month(ctod(birthday)) = month(ctod(calc-"rdt))

      That should do it.

        RE: Birthday Reports

I do the same thing with large databases. In mine I use a dialogue box, with radio buttons, that lists the individual month names. The month name, of course, becomes a variable. I use a report that is filtered to that specific variable based on the month(date) function. So the report filter is month(bday)= var-"getbdmonth, which yields a report of just that month. All of this was set up through use of Action Scripting rather than XBasic, given I am no expert or even novice on Xbasic.

          Wayne,
Attached is a Word doc Selwyn provided some time ago. It describes how to accomplish exacly what you want to do.

            Collin,

Thanks for the suggestion. I have searched the Help menu for "ASK" to learn more about that variable, but have not been able to locate any information to help me set up the option. I created my databases a long time ago and have not really done much "programming" work with them for some time. I believe the variable might be the answer to my need, if I can determine how to use it.

            Thanks,

            Wayne

I can't find any direct reference to ASK variables from the F1 key either. May I suggest a visit to the Alpha Five Learning Center and the .CHM files

You may find the small app attached a useful alternative. I take no credit for any scripting - I freely adapted from Alphasports.

May I also suggest you download "AlphaSports Explained"

                Postscript to above

Before someone points it out - the bad practice in Bithdays.adb in using the same name for the app, table and form.

sorry folks - done in the heat of the moment (a senior one)
