Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A5v5 BETA Feedback

Just thought I would share my thoughts on the A5v5 beta. This version is so feature packed, contains so many genies, functions, and is just so powerful and easy to use! I have written several complicated accounting type applications with almost NO inline Xbasic! They are written from the ground up in version 5 and I must say that the beta is extremely stable (more like a final product!). The Xbasic language is significantly enhanced and contains a new language within a language called Xdialog. But the folks at Alpha don't require you to learn it. You can simply use one of the Xdialog genies to create complex dialog boxes with database lookups and all Windows common controls like text boxes, check boxes, combo and list boxes. The great thing is none of these controls need to be bound to a database field like when you use a form. There are so many great new features including integrated zip/backup, Adobe PDF output of layouts, and integration with MS-Word and Excel. I know I sound like an advertisement for Alpha but anyone - I MEAN ANYONE - can create complex database apps with this INCREDIBLE PRODUCT!

Maybe we can create more complexer (my own new word) databases for our clients?

I'm still working through the beta version. Haven't really scratched the surface. One question....where is A5v5 INTEGRATED with MS WORD. I couldn't readily see it.

Oh and why is there no facility to have a mask in 'date' type field properties.

                      Jeremy,

You asked "why is there no facility to have a mask in 'date' type field properties."

In fairness to Alphasoftware, keep in mind we are referring to a "Beta" version. As with any Beta software, some features may not be implemented yet, and those that are may not work correctly.

However, I don't ever remember the 'date' type having the ability to have a mask. A date is a special data type, and while you can format the out, I believe the input mask is fixed.

                        RE: A5v5 BETA Feedback

Yes I know that the date can be output in different ways but if you want to quickly enter a date such as April 4th 2002, you cannot just enter 040402, this is not accepted, you have to enter 04 (space) 04 (space) 02 or something else with breaks eg 04/04/02. This makes data entry of the date MUCH slower.

But what the heck, as you say it is still a beta version, and I'm sure that everything will be 100% in the final release. Such is my supreme confidence judging by many years of previous experience with Alpha !

                          You can in version 4.xx

Are you sure about this one? I trip over this whenever I use software that is NOT Alpha...

Yes I am pretty sure, cos I tried it a few times and each time got the 'not a valid date' error message. The mask section in field properties for a 'date' type field is greyed out ie can't alter it

                              Jeremy,

You are correct about the behavior of a date field in A5V5. You should send an email to alpha with an example. Send to [email protected]. A Melvin pointed out, this is beta software and little gremlins are bound to exist. One of the purposes of giving users beta software is to find the little devils, but alpha needs informed about the result of your search so they can fix it.
