Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Bad block handle

A key form, based on a set, in my application was working almost perfectly, but I couldn't resist trying to make it perfect. I wanted to make the name field in a grandchild table shown in an embedded browse appear in alphabetical order.

I was successful with that, but after fiddling with some indexes and the set links, I've now acquired two "bad block handle" messages when opening the form. Oddly, I get one "bbh" message, then a second "bbh" message, then the form opens and seems to function normally even after the messages.

The message isn't very helpful. Alpha apparently knows what the problem is, but wants to make me guess! I've read the prior messages on this forum and the A5V4 forum and haven't been able to figure out what's wrong.

My question is, what is a block and where is its handle?

    Never mind....

After more fiddling, the errors went away. I don't know what caused them and I don't know how I fixed them, but now they are gone, so on to other problems...

Glad to hear it is fixed. For future reference, you can almost always get more detail on errors by opening the Trace Window and going to the error tab. But since it is not fixed, the world will never know :).

        Re: Bad block handle

        Hi all,
I'm just adding a bit of information for others who have this error come up. It has been mentioned as an answer by Alpha staff that this has been posted many times in V.4.xx threads but when I did the obvious search of Bad Block Handle I only got 10 hits, of which, only 8 really applied....and only 2 really had any suggestions as to how to fix or find the cause.

In my case it would only occur when going from design mode to form mode....never happened outside of this situation.
My form is set based on four tables with 4 embedded browses.

The culprit causing the error was on the OnActivate event using action scripting that would simply try to activate an object on the great-grandchild browse---used implicit and explicit with Xbasic conversion with no difference. This was diagnosed easy enough simply by duplicating the form and then taking scripts out until the error went away (and, of course, placed back in again to make certain it was the cause!).

Unknown to me as to exactly why the browses could not be seen by Alpha, but obviously the OnActivate event is not the place to put such script. As a side note I imagine that any script such as this on any event could then cause the same error.
BTW---the trace window did nothing for me as far as helping find where or what was causing this error---a very generic error regarding the ... show method ... which am certain most of us have seen many a time!

I imagine that you encountered a timing related issue. Doing something with a great grandchild browse at the instant a form is activated doesn't leave much time for the form to be "resolved"?
          There can be only one.

            Hi Stan,
I had thoughts along those lines as well but when it didn't help by placing xbasic_wait_for_idle() before and after the offending script I didn't think it was. I do agree that most likely , in my case, a lot has to do with dealing with a great-grandchild table.
The strange part regarding this is that the error almost went unnoticed as it only happened when coming out of design mode and did not seem to affect anything at all (everything on the form worked with no error messages called up)---I wanted to get rid of it though as I had a feeling it would come back to haunt me at a later time.

            thanks for the response,

            Mike
