Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How was the conference?

Please share your comments about the conference so those of us who couldn't attend have an idea about what we missed!

    What's the word on A5 v5?

Does any one have any material, e.g. handouts that they would be willing to share?

Thanks... from one who wishes he could have been there!

    RE: How was the conference?

To Dave and anyone else reading:

Once again Ira did a fantastic job of putting together a great conference. The hotel, food, AV equipment, speakers were all great.

I want to extend my personal thanks to the speakers as well as to Ira's wife who, as last year, was a major source of labor for the entire endeavor.

There were 2 tracks, the Advanced and Business. Many attendees moved back and forth between rooms to attend great presentations in both tracks. Selwyn gave further tantalizing presentations on A5V5 which must be the best database ever made available to programmers. The new features document is 170 pages long now and already out of date. You can't believe what this program can do. Each attendee received a bata version to play with and the laptops were humming away exploring the new features.

The new script writer alone, which replaces Action Scripting, would have been a major excuse to release a new version but there is so much more.

You should be planning to attend the next one of these wherever and whenever it's held.

Is this a different or updated document from the one available from the Alpha web site some months ago? If so, is it available to the rest of us?

        Paul,

I'm not usre how it compares and I don't think any of the attendees do either.

After viewing three sessions with Selwyn showing V5 features, I came away in utter amazement. I cannot adequately begin to explain it. It will literally take months to get to use all the new features and even at that, I'm not sure it can be done.

              RE: How was the conference?

I thoroughly enjoyed the conference and was vey impressed with the speakers' knowledge and generosity, and Selwyn's capability with V5.

I have a question about questions. Where should we be posing questions relating to doing things with the V5 beta version. This morning I was trying to create an update expression using the genie to populate a new field with a record ID field. I had four or five attempts, which got closer to success but I ended with an error message. Tonight I will try further to make sure it is not me, but if I run into a brick wall under which board do I pose questions?

Just a quick message from over the water. I thoroughly enjoyed the conference and thought it worth every penny of the substantial expense of getting there. It was great to meet everybody and I learnt a lot both from the sessions and just "networking" with everybody. As always the American hospitality was excellent.

please send your question directly to me. [email protected]. put 'a5v5 beta' in the subject line.

if possible include a sample database so that i can duplicate the problem and include step by step instructions.

the easier you make it for me to duplicate your problem the quicker i will respond. guaranteed!!

                    RE: How was the conference?

I'll verify that. I got an answer today to a question posed on Saturday afternoon.

Consider that Selwyn was somewhat busy Sunday and maybe a little tired on Monday.......

The conferencewas was the most brilliant affair. All that has been said is totally true, only to add that Version 5 is like going from a chipped flint stone to a laser cutter as a working tool. Yes you will need new skills but I beleive they will be learnt and developed that much faster. I cant wait for June for the final release.

                        RE: How was the conference?

                        Hi everyone,
I too, concur that the conference was absolutely astonishing. The most exciting thing I came away with, relative to A5V5 is the Scripting feature for creating Xbasic code. As soon as I get my hands on that hot product, I will be able to create scripts that would have probably taken a huge learning curve to do before V5. Then there's all the fun and exciting stuff, bubble messages, incredible EMAILing capabilities, one-step back-up, encrypting fields or tables, style sheets, hundreds of more genies, and more :-)

I'm also excited about Alpha's plans on bigger marketing, so that folks here on the west coast will be made aware that Alpha even exists.

Ira and wife (SORRY! Don't know her name) did an excellent job putting the conference together...I didn't notice one hitch the whole weekend! And a great round of applause for the brilliant Selwyn - always thinking of ways to satisfy us! (You would have had to have been there!) It was an honor, as well, to get to meet so many people who jump on the message board and help us little neophytes!

                        WELL WORTH THE EXPENSE!

After being at the conference and looking at the Beta briefly I've taken a liking to the design direction of the A5v5 database. While there have been a lot of features added, what I regard as more significant is the efforts to generalize Alpha Five to a simpler form and broaden its power.
The interesting new features are in part an outgrowth of the version 5.0 design changes. Yet the underlying Alpha software is now more accessable to programming and this gives it more power and generality to accomplish anything. Some of the methods have been made more regular and simplified as well as a result of writing the code in Xbisic and in revising the current menus. So the new database is an improved design and not just some new features tacked on the old software.
I was amazed at the number of changes and improvements going on for version 5.0 which seem to be easily qualified as too numerous to list.
