Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Windows XP

Could we have an official, authentic statement from Alpha Software that A5v4/4.5/5 will work properly with Windows XP?

      For Selwyn Rabins

      Selwyn,

Thanks for the confirmation re Windows XP.

Whilst I have your attention (I hope), I would like to know if you have any recognised agency/retail outlet for your products in the United Kingdom. You used to have during the heyday of Alpha 4 (and early days of Alpha 5) with a very helpful tech. support group but they seem to have vanished.

      Regards,
      Dennis

        RE: Windows XP

I just installed Windows XP, and am running Alpha 5 version 4.0. Everything works fine EXCEPT, I cannot enter, change, update MEMO fields. This has me dead in the water. I have ordered version 4.5 in the hope that it will work. If not, uh-oh Houston, we've got a problem :))

Have you tried reinstalling A5. Your installation of Windows XP may have overwritten a driver or critical file.

GREAT Idea, except I hate to go through all that nonsense about restoring the Arial Font, etc. I think I'll wait until my 4.5 gets here.

Thanks for the suggestion, anyway. I am interested if anybody else had the problem and fixed it by removing and reinstalling.

              Randy,

From what I've read version 4.5 is an update for version 4.03. It's not an update to achieve XP compatibilitiy. If it were me, I'd get version 4.03 working under XP before I upgraded to vers. 4.5.

OK.... You've convinced me, Tom. I just did not want to screw up something that I knew was working, more or less, but I shall remove my version 4.0 and re-install. I think maybe the postive 'yes it will work on XP' might be toned down just a bit, to yes-but..... :))

                  RE: Windows XP

I doubt V5 could possibly have as many problems with xp as microsoft is. I use foxpro occasionally and some of the wizards do not work. It will not build an executable in the runtime version.

I just bought a new laptop PC which came pre-loaded with xp. Now that I have transferred my data over from my old pc, I'm going to have to fdisk and start over installing windows me or 98. I dont think you can install an older version of windows on top of an existing one. ???

Also many hardware drivers are unavailable. Be careful before you upgrade.

Looking forward to v5. I think with Dr. Wayn's book & the "code completion" feature, I will become proficient in xbase.

                    --------------------
I cannot get Alpha 5 4.0 to function correctly under Windows XP. It seems to execute everything else, but continues to NOT update Memo fields. I have uninstalled @5 and re-installed it, and get the same thing.

I have about as plain vanilla system as one can get. I am running an HP Pavillion which I bought in July 2001, and came with Windows ME installed. I purchased a copy of XP last week, and the installation went fine -- though abouot an hour and a half.

Alpha 5 is my database of choice. I have about 15 applications, about a third of which make extensive use of memos to carry text of 'incidents', program notes, etc. I need help. I'm dead in the water :((

Could you comment on the views expressed in subsequent e-mails which cast doubt on your unequivocal statement that Alpha 5v4/4.5 will work with Windows XP?

                        RE: Windows XP

I just re-tested Alpha 5 version 4.5 build 266 on XP with the following conditions:

                        1. running from NTSF:
a specific routine took 34 seconds, running it three times

I opened a large file and added a field to the middle and to the end - totally successful - no ill side effects

I repeatedly entered and edited a memo field - totally successful

                        2. running from FAT32: (2nd hard drive)
the identical specific routine took 29/28/29 seconds, rendering an approximate 20% speed difference

I opened a large file and added a field to the middle and to the end - totally successful - no ill side effects

I repeatedly entered and edited a memo field - totally successful

                        3. I loaded alpha from NTSF and the application from FAT32 - completely successful!!

Since I saw others who reported problems with memos and file changes I thought I would try it myself. Apparently 4.5 runs better than 4.0 in these circumstances.

                          RE: For Selwyn Rabins

Hey, I don't want to get Selwyn in trouble.... He has seen Alphas through hard times, plus resurrected it when it fell on evil times!!! To paraphrase Gen. Buck Turgidson (George C. Scott) in Dr. Strangelove, "I don't want to draw any conclusions before all the facts are in, but it appears that 4.0 does not work when it comes to memo fields, but 4.5 does." AKA the general rule of thumb with software applies to Alpha 5 as well.... Use the latest version.

This suggests that Selwyn's statement might be adjusted to say that 4.0x will work as long as you don't use memo fields, and 4.5 will work in any case. (I have not received my mailed 4.5 yet, but as you see I have faith and am a believer :))

                            RE: Windows XP

Report from the XP Front: I received my 4.5 upgrade in the mail today, and installed it. It was not very talkative, and did not give much indication that it was finished. But after about 3 minutes, I decided to chance it. It is actually not an upgrade but a patch, and I ran my old Alpha 5 4.0 icon, and EVERYTHING WENT FINE!!!! Even the pesky MEMO fields behaved.

So my conclusion is that 4.5 indeed does run fine under XP, and that 4.0 runs, but does not handle memo fields.

v4.5, XP, 2000 work very well together. I have had it running for a while now.

I NEVER use memo fields in any application because if any changes are made, it can and usually does affect memo fields first.
