Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Next Alpha 5 Conference set for 3/21 -> 3/24/20

    To All,

I have begun work on the next Alpha 5 Developer's Conference to be held in Boston, Massachusetts, USA from Thursday Evening 3/21/2002 through Sunday at 5pm on 3/24/2002. This is just early information for all to begin planning their schedules.

It will be in the same hotel (The Burlington Four Points Barcelona) as the last one. Room rates will be $89 per night, BUT DO NOT RESERVE ANY ROOMS UNTIL DETAILS ARE FINALIZED IN THE NEXT COUPLE OF WEEKS. LIKEWISE, DON'T ORDER YOUR PLANE TICKETS YET UNTIL AN OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

We will have all 3 sections of the Ballroom for all 3 days. This will allow day and evening sessions without having to compete with noise from adjacent functions going on.

Depending upon desires and abilities of attendees, we will break the ballroom up into 2 or 3 tracks of programming, most likely a beginner's track and advanced track. (AND REMEMBER, IT'S NOT JUST FOR DEVELOPERS) The various topics will probably be covered in longer sessions (ranging 1 to 2 and half hours each). At times, we will meet as an entire group. The schedule will probably be something like

Thursday Evening - Registration and Get-together social 6PM-11PM
Friday - Programming from 9AM - 11PM including breakouts into smaller groups
Satuday - Programming from 9AM - 11PM including breakouts into smaller groups
Sunday - Breakouts into various groups from 9AM-5PM

For Friday and Saturday, one of the nights we will probably eat out from the Hotel together, the other either in the Hotel or on your own. After dinner, we'll meet back for breakouts and small topics

Exact subjects and speakers have not been determined as of this time, but will cover some of the same as well as different topics as last time. Let me know either in the message area or via e-mail any ideas and suggestions that you'd like to see.

I'll be looking for help from local A5 users in some operational issues (like collating 100's of Conference book for example), AV support and perhaps other issues. There may be other tasks that can be supported by others when they arrive as well.

    Til March,

Thats good that you want to do the conference. As I recall they were some who mentioned earlier about not doing this on Sunday but you did anyway. You have just lost 2 attendees because of your action. Those of who travel, don't want meetings on Sunday.

RE: Next Alpha 5 Conference set for 3/21 -> 3/2

I'm sure that picking the days was a tough call. Some can't get away from regular jobs to meet on Friday so they have to miss most of Friday's meetings. Those who can't stay through Sunday could always come for Thursday evening, Friday, and Saturday.

I think this should be marked up as just another instance of "can't please everybody no matter what you do."

I agree Cal. I hope that Ira understands that most are very apreciative of the effort that he is putting into holding this.

Thats great news, but what about us poor Brits who salivate at the thought of a conference but don't have the air miles to make it!

Wasn't there supposed to be a CD made of the last conference for those unable to attend? I don't remember who was going to produce it but it was supposed to be available by now. Any news on that???

RE: Next Alpha 5 Conference set for 3/21 -> 3/2

                      Bill and Henry,

I understand your concerns. I asked people several weeks ago about any issues with this particular choice of dates, and unfortunately I did not see any responses from you. Many individuals also said that weekends are better as they can not get away from work as easily during the week. Some expressed religious issues for Saturday or Sunday. Some said (as you say) only during weekdays. I'd love to please everyone if I could.

Getting a hotel and it's ballrooms for several full days is very difficult (at least around here) without choosing winter dates (risky due to bad weather delaying travel), holiday Dates or other prime-time dates(meaning expensive). A weekend conference is more doable than a weekday conference for business hotels. Further constraints include Alpha Software being able to attend as well.

As you can see on the rough schedule I listed above, I tried to put the bulk of the conference on Friday and Saturday, leaving Sunday available for smaller breakout sessions. I realize that Palm Sunday is that weekend, but the next doable dates would push it til August 2002.

I still hope you'll at least reconsider, and realize it's a tough egg to crack, no matter what days you choose. Perhaps if there is enough interest, we could even have a few early breakout sessions prior to the offical start of the conference for those arriving early on Thursday.

                      Regards,

IT MEANS THAT EACH TIME SOMEONE RESPONDS TO YOUR MESAGE, YOU WILL BE E-MAILED THAT A RESPONSE IS WAITING. iF YOU REALLY DON'T WANT THAT, MAKE SURE YOU REMOVE THE CHECKMARK IN THE BOX THAT SAYS TO DO SO BEFORE YOU REPLY.

sORRY ABOUT THE CAPS, I AM REALLY NOT SHOUTING.

The envelope flags your request to be emailed when a response is posted, not the fact of a response.
