Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

RE: Next Alpha 5 Conference set for 3/21 -> 3/2

      Jeremy,

As I have said before in previous threads, the CD-ROM will be made available as soon as I finish the editing of it to conference attendees. Others may purchase it for a currently undetermined amount.

It is an extra that was not guaranteed and has been a real chore in editing due to lack of consistent volumes, extraneous talking, crashes in the systems while originally recording the conference, etc. Hopefully, this can be improved in future conferences to make it faster. But this is also the reason why attendance is a much surer bet.

Now that the school year has begun (and my child is in school), I should have a bit more time to concentrate on it. You can be sure that IF it becomes available, you will see announcements on the message board about it.

I didn't notice this until I got ready to register, so just making sure (and to let those who have only seen this message board thread): the dates have now been moved from 3/21/2002-3/24/2002 to December1-2-3, 2001. Correct?

Well, I guess I'm really confused. Please ignore my last post. Somehow, I got referred to an Alpha Five Developers Conference website (www.ultranet.com/~csda/a5conf/) for the December, 2000 conference which I thought was for the next conference and didn't really even look at the dates on the website. Then I saw December, but not the year. So I guess we're still waiting for registration info, is that correct? Sorry for creating confusion.

RE: Next Alpha 5 Conference set for 3/21 -> 3/2

              Hi Kevin,

The 1st Alpha 5 Developer's Conference was held on 12/1/2000 in the Boston area. There was one planned for November 2001 in Phoenix AZ (organized by another developer Mike Reed) that had to be cancelled. The next one currently planned is for March 21, 2002 in the Boston area (same basic hotel info and directions as the last one in Boston (Alpha 5 Developer's Conference web page)

HOWEVER, with the recent sad events that have occured, there is some risk in operating the conference. The real question is whether there are many who would not attend due to travel constraints that now being imposed. This affects the whole scope of the conference and how much it covers.

I realize that it is still early, and that many can not be 100% definite, but I'd like to hear from those who still think they will attend. Those that are within driving distance can probably be a bit more definite. If you can't attend (for whatever reason), or would still be up in the air let me know that as well.

Either way, post a message or send an e-mail. I'd like to hear from you.

                Hi, Ira -

I wouldn't miss this next conference unless the airlines all shut down completely. The last one was a great experience, and I think that with A5V5 probably being out by then that we'll all be able to learn a great deal.

I learn more from the questions that others ask, and the answers that everybody pitches in on, than from my own questions which usually turn out to be rather trivial.

                Keep up the good work!!

                  Ira,

I'll be at the conference - whatever dates are selected. My students will get some 'busy work', and they'll love me for it.

Recognizing that you are in the cool northeast and that March is not the most reliable of months, is there any chance of a warmer climate? I'm not trying to cause trouble, I'm just asking.

RE: Next Alpha 5 Conference set for 3/21 -> 3/2

                    Hi Dave,

After a lot of issues given with the current climate of air travel in the US, and with other details, the Hotel contract has been finalized. The dates will be from Thursday evening 3/21/2002 to Sunday about 5pm on 3/24/2002. If people are hanging around during the day on Thursday, or waiting for their flights on Monday, I'll bet we can also run some small worksessions for those who are still around.

I'm working on an update of the web site for the conference and will let everyone know when posted.

I'm sorry I couldn't arrange it for a warmer time or warmer climate, but I'm not able to organize a conference outside my area. If you'd like, I'll have the temperature in the room increased! :?) And their is an indoor pool!

Speakers and program tracks have not been set yet, as it will depend upon the numbers of people registering (early I hope) and what the projected attendance will be. Since some people have an adversion to being there Sunday, we will probably have more individual worksessions for that day, and have more of the programming on Friday & Saturday. We have all the ballrooms for all 3 days, so there shouldn't be a noise issue like we had with some worksessions on Saturday night last time.

                    See ya there,

How about sessions in the pool, or the spa?
Seroiusly, I wonder if enough people would be interested to make it worthwhile to set up an 802.11b server in the room to distribute code or whatever?
It would be the easiest way to send files to the attendees.

Ira, I am new to this board, but have been using Alpha Software A4, & A5 for several years, (about 10) and would enjoy attending the Conference. Could you post the details, such as is there a fee for the conference and how much as well as the finalized plans. Count me in.

Orlando would be good next time Ira!

The Hotels in Orlando dont really need a lot of prompting to set up a conference, They can handle about anything.

Disney and the other sites in Orlando seem to pull a lot of conference traffic.

                            Think about it
