Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Permissions and 3rd party exe

I tend to work with people that might fall into the category of "know just enough to be dangerous" when it comes to computers. So they are more prone to 'delete' the shortcut and then try to manufactor another from the exe in the folder.

I say that as a preface to why I made a "startup application". The application is just a few lines of Liberty Basic code that utilizes the RUN Command. Anyway what I found was that I could startup my A5 applications but it couldn't "find" any forms after the startup form (which is based on a dummy table). Oddly when I entered the app (using a hotspot) I saw NO forms or reports/letters... just the tables and the paths were not available. It was vexing me for some time because if I just clicked on the Alpha5.exe (runtime) and then opened the application it worked fine (all forms available etc). It also worked if I just double clicked the .adb file. So what was my exe doing different?!?!

Well as it turns out (I hope this is it) the permissions on my secretaries computer did not include "everyone" when it came to my application. So the exe I made was evidently not on the list because despite being opened by the user the user was not technically opening A5... or so it seems because upon changing permission to everyone it worked like a charm.

So I guess I'm offering this as just a footnote for others but I also don't fully understand why I was able to get the startup form and no other forms? Shouldn't I get nothing if the issue is permissions? Maybe the permission thing is a red herring but now that it works I can't really tinker with it. Anyway if anyone has any thoughts I would appreciate any feedback.

    Thanks,

    ~joe

Without a detailed description of what permissions were set and on what tables, it's going to be difficult to figure out what the problem is.

But, the best solution is set the permissions that the user needs and go from there rather than trying to figure out why something in Windows didn't work the way you expected it to.

RE: Permissions and 3rd party exe

I'm sorry I meant to follow up on this. As it turns out I also fall into the "know just enough to be dangerous" when it comes to A5 and creating a 3rd party exe. I've used LB before to launch programs using the RUN Command and generally if the exe was in the same folder as the program it was to launch I didn't need to hard code the path (although even some that weren't in the folder could be launched without the path - for example notepad).

Well in this case it seems that something was happening that is quite frankly above my paygrade. While it "appeared" that the program was being launched it was evidently just a "ghost" of some kind. So while it opened up the start form it couldn't find the the other forms.

I don't have time to make a demo of the problem right now but it is interesting. Just out of curiosity I would like to know what is happening...

RE: Permissions and 3rd party exe

I was just moving some files around and noticed that the runtime provides a "Recently opened databases.txt".

        Well it had two entries:

One was a direct path C:\program files\ etc etc
The other included the user C:\Documents and Settings\ etc

So evidently without the path hard coded a "user" issue of some sort arises. Too bad because I was hoping to avoid hard coding the paths. No good reason - just thought it would be nice to have some flexibility.

The cat was skinned with a different method...
