Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Behind schedule?

Alpha 5 v 5 isn't out yet? It seems to be behind schedule.
When do they now expect to release it?

    RE: Behind schedule?

Who knows why the delay in releasing v5? I think Selwyn wnated to release it much sooner but I'm thinking some features were added at the last minute. I remember Cian asking about a feature and some said they would like it even if it took several months additional development time to get it done.

Additionally, I have no doubt that Selwyn is well aware of the need for documentation along the lines of the A4 docs. I suspect this is adding to the delay. Anyhow, last rumor is 3rd quarter. That begins in 2 weeks but don't be surprised if it's later in the quarter than sooner. I can wait but with each passing week, the drool gets a little thicker.

      RE: Behind schedule?

Instead of getting impatient be glad that Selwyn doesn't just throw a beta version out on the market and (like Microsoft does) call it a commercial version. Adding features and capabilities can take a bit of time. Sometimes adding a feature here can mess up how a product acts with other features there.

It takes a lot of testing and rewrites to get any product to markeet. And I can tell from its capabilities that v5 is not just "any" product. v5 is extremely robust and, as others have commented on this board in the past, it makes Access and some others look like toys.

The wait will be well worth it. I've been working with a beta release and it has way too many new more powerful features than my time allows to play with. :(

Be patient. Let them finish what they're doing. Then go crazy with all the new goodies when it's released.

        RE: Behind schedule?

I think I figured out the reason for the delay in releasing A5v5. I believe the real reason is a little company called Microsoft and their soon to be released new O/S of XP.

Going by past O/S releases, MS hypes compatabiity with old applications but actually does their best to insure they won't run on the new O/S. :) So Selwyn et al is probably playing smart and making sure that A5v5 will work nicely (or even better? ) with XP.

That's my theory and I'm sticking to it!

          RE: Behind schedule?

More and more do I hear resentment over Microsoft's registration scheme for XP, where everytime you install it, you have to call/contact Microsoft for a new registration key. I already have one program that works this way, and it is certainly a pain, and that is when you can get right through to them. Fortunately, I haven't had to do this but twice and that was due to problems with installing Win ME. The attitude around here is that, for those not heavily invested in programs that require some form of Windows, Unix/Linux is looking better and better. Also, the new Mac operating system, OS X, is unix based, optionally allowing the use of unix commands as needed. Perhaps this may be more motivation for a Unix version of A5 somewhere down the road, especially if it can run on Macs as well. There is no good Mac database, evidently, and Macs seem to be getting a larger share of the market. A friend that teaches at Univ of Wisconsin in Milwaukee said they gave all the teaching staff new iMacs recently, so I suspect the mostly PC/Windows world is starting to fragment more than we think.

            Just FYI...

I have been running A5v4 on WinXP Beta 2 since mid-May.

I haven't run into any problems thus far. It seems to run significantly faster.
