Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    upgrades

When we get the latest upgrades, does this upgrade the entire software, or just the parts involved? I have problems with A5V5 every time I use it, which is probably why I've gotten away from using it. Today, I can't update a field with serial numbering by a value in another field (filter for that value). It says it's done it, but nothing happens. Also, I create a new browse and it is 'shadowed' and I can't operate on it, unless I copy it to another browse. This is just today. Other days, other problems.

    RE: upgrades

    Hi Sandra,
I would assume that the upgrade are file specific, as there would be no reason to upgrade files that haven't been edited/altered.

Re the serial updating, are their field rules on the field that you want to update that is preventing the update?

Re the shadowing of the browse I would guess is most likely caused by the table being in a seperate folder.

I guarantee you, though, that you will find very knowledgeable and helpful people on this message board, Sandra, including the awsome Rabins brothers, Selwyn and Richard and their staff, so post the problems and you'll make steady progress :) I would have been lost quite a few times if not for this board, in spite of Alpha 5v5 being the easiest and most powerful db management software around.

Now I am reaching out to try to give back by helping others.

I will be signing off soon, but will try to hop on the board from my home computer later this evening, or tomorrow, if you post a reply.

    chin up :)

      "I can't update a field with serial numbering.... "

Does this mean that you have created an auto-increment field rule for this field. If so, it is easy to see how an update operation could conflict with the filed rule.

I have no idea what you mean by creating a new browse and discovering it to be shadowed. Care to provide further details. Are you operating on a network or on a stand-alone machine. If you are logged into a shadow copy of a network application it would not be surprising to find that any new browse you created would be part of the local shadow application rather than the server copy (which is not open on your machine).

Of course I can have no idea whether this is the case unless you describe your situation fully.

        RE: upgrades

The tables are all in the same file. However, I just tried it again and had no problem. I do know that it has happened other times in the past, though.
There are no field rules on the field in question.
Thanks for your encouragement. I'm mostly doing statistical analysis now, but I need to manipulate the data before analysing it, quite often. SAndy

I have a stand-alone application, Bill. The serial update is an Operation - and I CAN update the field by removing all the previous numbers, leaving it blank. But then the Operation, Update, fill with serial numbers (or something like that) does not work. I specify to start with the number 1 and increment serially. Is that enough info? Sandy

            RE: upgrades

            Sandy,
Is there a field rule defined for the field? If so, delete the rule and try the update operation.

Is the table you are trying to update part of a set. If so is the field in question involved in the link to another table in the set?

When you and I tire of 20 questions it will be the time for you to zip up your application and post it here for me and others to inspect. Somebody will figure out what's going on.

              Sandy,

I forgot to ask what version of A5 you are using:
The current version is 1506.1058 (viewed in help/about).

And which operating system and how much memory (not that I suspect this is involved in what you're experiencing).

                RE: upgrades

The field has NO field rules, and it's not part of a set, Bill. I run on Windows XP (Home Edition). I have 256 Megs of memory. Hmmm - is that all the questions? I could hand-number the 250 or so records - I was just trying to use one of the many automated operations to save time - which it hasn't! I'm grateful you are still answering people's questions on the message board - where do you and others find time?? SAndy

                  Hi again,

Hand numbering those records would violate my religion. I really can't tell what's amiss. Why don't you zip up the application and post it here. I won't be able to send you files you can open because whatever I create using the full edition you can't open in the home. But I can still debug what you send and others here have the home edition available.

I have the full edition of Alpha Five, and the latest build. The Home Edition is of Windows XP.
I'll attach just one of the tables - they are all separate now in this dB. I'm trying to update the Student_ID field incrementally by each Instructor number. Now to attach the zip file:

                      Sandra,

I had no problem with your table. I created a database and downloaded your table; added the table to my newly created database. From there, I was able to create a new browse with no problems. Then I added a field called serno to your table and used the update genie to assign serial numbers to the new field. I know this isn't much help, but it seemed to work fine at this end.

                        RE: upgrades

I'm trying to assign serial numbers by a filtered field - instructor. I wanted to serially number each student of each instructor - starting over with each different instructor. I was able to serially number the entire table's student_id field (when I set an index only), but not this other way. I tried one instructor and when it finished updating, a partial right-click menu pops up, though my cursor is nowhere near it.
Maybe I'll change my strategy and just serially number all students - it might make no difference. The only way to find out is to try it! Thanks for your effort. The browses, by the way, are now working (why I don't know). Sandy

                          RE: upgrades

                          Sandy,

Like Ohlen I created a new database to which I added your table.

First (using the genie) I created a saved operation to assign serial numbers to all students starting from "001". This worked fine.

But I know you want to restart numbering for each new teacher so (again using the genie) I defined a second update operation to work on currently selected records. My thought was you would open a form or browse, place the cursor in the teacher id field, run quick filter to query the table on instructor and then run the saved operation.

This generated an error. So unless I slipped up there is something amiss with the genie.

I then copied the low level xbasic generated by the genie to the clipboard and createded a button to run that code on the table's default form.

                          This works. That is:
                          -with no query in place all records are numbered serially;
-with the display restricted to teacher 16 only that guy's records are numbered serially.

So you can go this route. Be sure to open my sample into a separate folder.

Perhaps others will verify my experience with the genie.

                          My OS is XP-pro.
