Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Field Rules from A4V6 to A5V4

I am new at this missage board thing so I hope I am approaching this in the right way.

I am at this time using A4V6 but am ording A5V4.I understand that when it is installed that it won't transfer any forms or report setups. What about field rules and functions and expressions. Will they all have to be rewritten (functions and expressions) and will field rules have to be resetup again. Will the functions and expressions from A4V6 work in A5V4 if they have to be rewritten? (I have a hard time with Function and Expressions. I can't quite get the understanding on how you put all the different expressions and functions to get what you want to accomplish)

Another question I have is once a conversion from A4V6 to A5V4 is done, Can you still use A4V6 with all the database still intact?

If I have any questions about how to do different things that I don't quite understand, can I post a message here andget some help?

    Thank You
    Allen

RE: Field Rules from A4V6 to A5V4

    Allen:
Move your next post to the Alpha5v4 section of the board. You will get more responses. This section is for announcement type info from alpha.
Only the DBF's can come over to Alpha5.
All Forms, Reports and field rules will have to be re-done.
There is a big learning curve from alpha4 to alpha5.
Start out by copying your DBF's to a new directory.
You will have to open alpha5 and build a new application. The old dbf's will now be called tables.
the old application will now be called Alpha database.
After the application is built then you attach your existing tables(databases) by clicking on the green plus sign on the top menu bar.
You then can right click on the table(database) and edit field rules.
Then start building forms for data input.
Don't get discouraged. It will take longer than alpha4.
What type of applications do you have?

A little clarification of Charlie's comment:
"After the application is built then you attach your existing tables(databases) by clicking on the green plus sign on the top menu bar."

First, note that Charlie said to "copy" your data not "move" it - keep your old A4 data and application until the A5 version is completed. Copy only the .dbf, and .fpt files to the new directory you will use for the A5 application. This should be a separate directory - not the same directory the A5 program is in. (I even keep my application directories on a different drive but only because my C: drive is too small.)

Next, in order to see those dbf files in v5, you will first need to create a "database" to hold them. Create the database in the same directory that you copied the files to. Give it any name you want. Then you can use the green "+" button or, a method I find easier for getting large numbers of dbf's moved quickly, open Windows Explorer, view by 'details', sort by 'type', then highlight and drag all the dbf files to the A5v4 'Tables/Sets' window. (In fact, I'd forgotten the "+" button was even there.)

Finally, although Charlie didn't come right out and say it, YES, people on this board will be glad to help you. But, as Charlie said, you should post your questions in the A5v4 section rather than the Announcements section.

RE: Field Rules from A4V6 to A5V4

A minor note on Cals post-- Copy over the DBF and DBT. I see it's been a while since cal's been working with A4. In A5 DBF's stay DBF's but DBT's become FPT.

PS I am currently involved in doing what you are contemplating. It's a lot of work but it should be worth is when V5 is released.

Thanks for the help I will deffinetly need all I can get whenI get the program. I had a hard time learning A4V6 but enjoyed doing it though. I am just small time potatoes to this database stuff. Just doing for myself.

          Thanks again
