Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    how to duplicate a database

Is there a way to duplicate a database (no, not a table, but a whole DB, complete with reports, forms, etc.)?

Lacking that, is there a way to copy a report from one database to another?

    Robert:

What do you want to do, copy an entire database or simply copy one report? If it's one report, Tom Kiske just asked the same question, so check out the answers.

As for your other question, the answer is yes. Duplicating an entire database is very easy.

RE: how to duplicate a database

I have a database with hundreds of tables, sets, and reports. I must run this on slow machines. My idea is to break it into several databases, arranged by task, each with only a handful of tables, sets, and reports.

I figure I can either dupe the whole database, then prune the tables and reports I do not need; or else create a new database, add the handful of tables and sets, and copy the relevant reports.

Kiske wants to copy a report within a database. I want to copy it to a new database.

What I am trying right now is to copy the .alb, .alx, .alm. and .adb files to new names, then open the result and prune.

        Got it...

        "ol"
"li"Create new database in same dir
        "li"Add relevant table
        "li"Reports come with
        "/ol"

RE: how to duplicate a database

          Robert:

I thought the concept of copying a report to another database was covered in the other thread.

I don't know anything about your computer[s] or application so I'm shooting in the dark. Before breaking down your current database into several smaller ones, my first inclination would be to:

Spend $400 [or less] to buy a new, fast computer
Spend a lot less than that to upgrade the memory on your current computer
Redesign your current application to make it more efficient

If none of the above is appropriate, it sounds as if you already figured out how to copy an entire database to another folder and give it a new name. Once thats done, you can as you mentioned, start pruning. But I still like my recommendations above.

            Robert:

If you insist upon breaking up your database into several smaller ones, here is one option.

             Create a brand new folder
Create a brand new, empty database in the new folder.
Copy all of the current database files except the ADB, ALB, ALM, ALX, muf files to the new folder.
Add the appropriate tables to your new database
             Compact the database
Repeat this process for every new database you want to create.

Robert, as I understand it, the only performance difference would be that the app will initially load faster, as there are fewer files for the "control panel", etc., to read, but after the initial load, it would not make any difference.

Martin, I can see it making a big difference already. This business is running on some very challenged machines; quite capable of running A4, but struggling to open A5.
