Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Great Conference!

A special thank you to Ira for organizing an outstanding A5 conference this past weekend in Burlington. Also a special thanks to Selwyn and Richard for spending the whole weekend with us. Your presence was a strong statement of your support to the users of A5. Your presentations were inspirational - I can't wait for V5 and V6 - wow.

Again thanks to all the speakers and to everyone. It certainly was an A5 Revival!

    RE: Great Conference!

I support 100% with Dave says! The seminars were great, but not to take anything away from the presenters, I concur that the highlight of the weekend was Selyn and Richard spending their weekend with those of us that made it to Burlington. I was so pumped about V5 that I read Richard's handout of new features on the flight home! Now I'm paying for it.

Meeting the other attendees and puting faces to names was lots of fun, as was the food Saturday night. I think Ira should do it again - what do you all say?

"I think Ira should do it again...."

This is hardly fair. As my wife says, "No good deed goes unpunished."

Seriously, I (and all others, I'm sure) feel a strong debt to Ira, so thanks, Ira, from us all. It was wonderful.

        RE: Great Conference!

Since I only recently started developing with AlphaFive, the Conference timing was perfect. It was a confidence builder to see the enthusiam of long-time and new AlphaFour and Five users.

I had searched the Message Board on a daily basis for answers to questions or problems, but I had never dared to post a message.

Thanks to all of the instructors (especially Steve and Francee) who unselfishly gave of their time to assist with our ventures!

            Jeremy,

Ira is planning on a release of a CD of the conference sometime in January 01. It will have almost all of the sights & sounds of the entire conference. He will be charging a fee (well worth it) which will fund the next conference. Those who were not able to attend missed a great conference.

You will find A5v5 to be everything and more of your wildest expectations for a database.

              Great News Ken

Please let me know when Ira's CD will be available. Do we know when A5v5 will be available??

                RE: Great Conference!

I agree with Jeremy (from another U.K user),

The CD sounds a marvellous idea, I would jump at the chance of getting my hands on it. I know it can't make amends for missing the conference and the chance to meet up with many people I have communications with, although I'm bloody sure I'd benefit from it greatly.

                Cheers

                    RE: Great Conference!

I second Deborah's comments - the conference showed me how much can be done, even WITHOUT XBasic, which I've struggled with. Now I'll start using more of the genies and Action Scripting, and eventually maybe venture into the XBasic when it becomes necessary. Thanks, Ira for a great conference!!

                        RE: Great Conference!

I heard the conference CD will be available early in new year and v5 around end of March.

I'd like to add my thanks to Ira and his wife for all their efforts in putting on a truly wonderful conference, to the Rabins brothers and other Alpha staff for spending their weekend with us, to all the speakers and work group leaders for their enlightenment and encouragement, and especially to all the conference participants for their enthusiasm and fellowship. As I told those I met at the conference - I was there just for the fun of it - I'm not (yet) an Alpha developer - but I will be, especially when I get my hands on v5. It looks like an exceptional product. I have no regrets about attending - I did have fun!!

I intend to do a write-up on the conference for my local PC Users' Group's monthly newsletter - I hope other attendees will do the same - we need to get the word out about what a great product this is.

Once you have your write up, it would be great if you could
send it to me for posting on the web site.

                            Hi Richard:
I will try to do the review soon, while I'm still so hyped about a great conference, but in reality, can't promise to get it done right away. Nonetheless, I will indeed pass it along to you.
                            Thanks again.

                              Selwyn,

I am duly impressed with the proposed Version 5. The only thing that is missing is the optional keymap for V1 compatability. :) None the less, I am curious as to what pricing options will be offered.
IE: upgrade from V1 full version
                              Network option 5 PC's
                              " " 25 "
                              Runtime only

I understand that it is not expected to be released until 2nd quarter 2001. However, the features you have documented are very nice and now is the time for consultants to discuss the costs of upgrading and implementing the features. That makes it very important to have some kind of pricing information.

                              Thanks in advance,
                              Melvin
