Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A5 V5.0 Runtime?

Will the v5 runtime be available at the same time as the regular version. Any thoughts on the price of runtime yet?

    RE: A5 V5.0 Runtime?

We have not set pricing for V5 yet, but it is reasonable to assume that the runtime will be available at the same time. Unfortunately, I don't know yet when the release date for V5 will be as we still have some work to do.

I can say that we are extremely happy with the way the development is going, and we will be showing V5 publicly for the first time at the a5 developer and user conference in boston at the beginning of december.

Selwyn, if the devcon is the first v5 will be shown, how about a list of new feature. If could be ongoing, but there are some features that would be important to me, and if I knew whether they would be there I could plan accordingly. For instance, how about set level field rules (as in A4)?

      Thanks

        RE: A5 V5.0 Runtime?

        Just another opinion...

Set level field rules can be very useful but can also cause great confusion. I've had to work on some A4 databases originally created by other developers and the dual field rules have caused me to spend a lot of extra time trying to understand what the other developer was doing. (It also caused me to make a few mistakes along the way - this tends to make the users rather unhappy.)

It originally took me some time to get used to working with only one set of field rules but I now find it much safer and, I think, a better practice. Unfortunately, I believe I recall hearing that they were going to add set level field rules again in V5.

I try to only put field rules in A4 on sets thereby avoiding the problems of dual field rules.

            RE: A5 V5.0 Runtime?

we are not planning on having set level field rules in v5 because i believe that a rule is a rule and you should not have one set of rules for a field under one condition and another under another condition.

that being said, in v5 if you are editing field rules for the set (which is really the same as editing field rules for the individual tables in the set), the expression builder for things like default values etc. WILL show you all of the field for the other tables in the set, thus allowing you to create expressions that involve child tables very easily. a5 will then automatically convert these expressions to use the lookup() function so that the rule works regardless of whether you are using the table stand alone, or in the context of a set

              RE: A5 V5.0 Runtime?

That is great news! Having set field rules can result in confusion. With the addition of including the other tables in the set there is no need for having a different sets of field rules.

I assume this feature will be included in the long awaited A5v5 Feature list which should be coming soon?

                RE: A5 V5.0 Runtime?

While set level field rules have worked well for me, I guess being able to access the other tables will do the same thing but work a little differently. I was hoping I could just copy the set logic to A5 for field rules to make conversion easier, but hey I'm just lazy. I should be able to do it OK in v5
