Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Argument is Incorrect Data Type

    I am using Bill Warner's script from the 4-1-04 newsletter. It gets down to the last line and I get this message;

    Argument is Incorrect Data Type

    (see attached jpg)

    FWIW, I also had to change the 2nd line of the script from:

    cstnam = ui_get_text("CUSTOMER NAME","Enter Customer Name",cstnam)

    to:

    cstnam = ui_get_text("CUSTOMER NAME","Enter Customer Name","")

    W/o the change of cstnam to the double quotes, I got the error message, cstnam not found.

    Any thoughts as to why I get the error messages, especially the first one?

    Thanks,

    kenn

    RE: Argument is Incorrect Data Type

    Got to thinking afterwards it might be useful to show the entire script for reference to save time looking it up. Here's the entire script Bill wrote.

    kenn

    dim cname[200] as c
    cstnam = ui_get_text("CUSTOMER NAME","Enter Customer Name",cstnam)
    if cstnam = ""
    end
    end if

    ln = len(cstnam)
    tc = table.open("customer")
    query.order = "Custid"
    query.filter = "left(Custname,var-"ln) = var-"cstnam"
    query.options = ""
    ndx = tc.query_create()
    qt = ndx.records_get()
    tc.fetch_first()

    if qt = 0
    ui_msg_box("CUSTOMER NOT FOUND","There is no match for " + trim(cstnam) + ".",16)
    end
    elseif qt = 1
    cstid = tc.custid
    else
    I = 0
    WHILE .not.tc.fetch_eof()
    I = I + 1
    cname[I] = tc.Custid + tc.custname
    tc.fetch_next()
    END WHILE
    cstn = ui_get_list_array("SELECT CUSTOMER",1,"cname")
    cstid = word(cstn,1)
    end if

    parentform.Index_Set("Cust_ID")
    parentform.find( cstid )

      RE: Argument is Incorrect Data Type

      If you are working with AlphaSports, I found the following adjustments to be helpful...

      insert second line
      dim cstnam as c

      change any references to

      custid to be CustOMER_id

      custname to be LASTname

      Or you can change the name of customer_id to be custid and add a custname field, probably calculated from firstname and lastname.
      There can be only one.

        RE: Argument is Incorrect Data Type

        Hi Stan,

        Not working w/AlphaSports but similar app. The first part helped (Dim cstnam as c) but the last part is a hum-dinger. No matter what I try, I keep getting the same error message as posted above on either of the last 2 lines. just depends on the combination:

        parentform.Index_Set("Custid")
        parentform.find( cstid )

        or

        parentform.Index_Set("Cust_id")
        parentform.find( cstid )

        Whatever........thanks,

          parentform.Index_Set("Cust_ID") - sets the index-in-effect to "cust_id". If you don't have an index by this name you will get that error message.

            RE: Argument is Incorrect Data Type

            Well...........That's what I thought. I have changed/created that index 4-5 times but Alpha keeps changing the indexes on me, 1) removing the _ so it reads custid instead of cust_id and then creating 2 indexes with the same name, Inv_Number (See attached)

            I've renamed it and it stays for awhile and then is renamed by A5. Sometimes A5 asks me to rename one of them but as soon as I do, it deletes itself.

            Not really sure what I have going that is forcing Alpha to react with such an upset stomach.

            What should I look for?

            Thanks,

              Alpha creates indexes as needed for linking to child tables, etc. Note that one of the inv_number indexes is sorted ascending and the other descending.

              Without your tables I couldn't even guess why it is being semi-duplicated.

                Stan,

                I knew Alpha would generate it's own index/s when needed and to avoid spending a bunch of time (both you and me), I created a 2 table database and got it working.

                I'll just remove the tables from the app and copy the new ones, using copy and paste rather than alpha.

                Thanks for the suggestions,
