Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Trace Window and error 1508

    Hi Guys
I am stuck again. Can u help me?

Query 1: When i was writing the field rules for an application of mine, in the calculated field, when i was saving, A5 says, " 4 errors. Please see the trace window". Now what is this trace window and where do u go to see it?

Query 2: I have set 2 fields in a table as a calculated field. This table is part of a set. When I went to review the field rules in the set, for the same field, the expression builder says, "incomplete expression" and says, error 1508. Now where is the glossary for errors and what does error 1508 mean?

    My basic problem is this:
I have the following fields viz,
    1. Bed charges
    2. Nursing charges
    3. Infusion charges
    4. Alok's visit charges
    5. Alok's Procedure charges
    6. Alok's Total
    So alok's Total = Visit+ Procedure and
    7. Total Bill is the total of all the above fields, right?
It works in this table and all these are numeric fields.
But when I open the field rules of the set of which this table is a part of,
    the error comes.
    What is the problem?

    Pl help me
    ,
    Sincerely
    Dr Alok Modi MD

    Hi Doc,

Don't know about the error but I hope your field names do not have spaces in them. This would be asking for trouble.

A while back I wasted a lot of time tracking down an error caused by an illegal field name (not that spaces are illegal--just imprudent). From then on I resolved to use plain vanilla field names. Remember that field rules allow you to supply a descriptive field name for use in layouts, etc.

    Good luck with the error.

      No NO williams
I am not leaving any blanks in field names. As it is in the table structure, A5 automatically gives _ between two words for field names.

Thanks anyway, I hope I get tha answer soon,

RE: Trace Window and error 1508

        Hey DOC,

I am no expert, it has been a mere month of me evaluating Alpha Five for the first time, and the expiration period is haunting me every day. What I do know, I would love to share. Though, the information is not much, I can tell you this: The trace window is a option in the main toolbar of the control panel. When you click on "View" in the toolbar, the first thing u will see is "Trace Window". Click that and go in to view any errors that your Alpha database application is catching while running the database. The errors are divided in subcategories: user, error, viewevent, hookerror.

Now i have not done any reading on the formal description on these, but i doubt that there would be none present. I just didnt have the time to read through unwanted material...anyways going back to the point..."user" errors most probably mean errors related to what the user types in or does when the application is running. "error" is where a log of all errors that Alpha encounters while compiling your forms, reports or etc. in your applicaiton. "viewevent" is a log based on "sessions" of each time a form or report or etc. was opened and alpha had something to say or comment about it. "hookerrors" are a mystery for me also..haha...so far i didnt have to bother with them...

well, im outa time. Hope atleast i pointed u in the right direction. wait and hopefully someone more experienced then me might have something else to say.

        cheers!

          Dr. Modi,

If you go to the interactive window and type
          ?error_text_get(1508)
          then
          = "Field is not recognized"
          is returned.

            Dr. Modi,

Do not rely on A5 to supply the underscores. It does so, but not in every single context. So put them in yourself. This is the voice of experience speaking.

RE: Trace Window and error 1508

              Doc,

You can go to the Interactive Editor and type:
              ?error_text_get(1508)
to find out what an error code means. In this case, it is:
              "Field is not recognized"

Note: I believe there are a number of error codes that will not return any text.

Worse yet - sometimes the error code doesn't properly describe the real problem. I've never heard of the problem you are describing - names work in table but not in set. I suspect there is some type of issue related to the names but it may not be an issue with the basic name. Is there any OnSave or OnWrote event running that might reference a field name?

To find the Trace Window, click "View" on the menu bar. "Trace Window" is the very first item. With luck this may point you directly to the problem.

And, at the risk of seeming to over-do it since I've mentioned this in many other messages, I'd like to point out a document I created regarding naming convention guidelines. I don't believe this is directly related to your current issue but I do believe you will find some ideas that can make your overall development process (long term) easier and "safer". The document is on my website at http://www.aimsdc.net/Tips_Funcs/A5_Naming_Conventions.HTM. Note that these are only recommendations - not requirements. I know of a number of developers who use different conventions - the primary purpose of my document is to make people aware of some of the reasons for using a naming convention so they can make an educated choice for themselves.

                Hi All
                Thanks guys
You all were right. i had not put a _ between the two worded file name of my table and hence the set was getting confused.

I could not decipher the meaning of error 1508 as I am not comfortable yet with XBasic.
Mr Locklin, I'll study your article soon. Thanks,

                Thanks again all
                Warm reagards
