Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Welcome to the New Message Board

Welcome to the new Alpha Software Message
    Board

You will find many improvements in the way in
which this message board operates. We hope you enjoy using it!

Features of the Alpha Software Tech
    Support Message Board
    Attach
    files to messages.
Attach a Zip file to your message. This allows you to
attach a sample of your database to demonstrates the problem you are having.
Often it is easier to explain your problem with an example file that it is to
    describe it in words!
    E-mail notification. Specify that you
should get an e-mail notification whenever someone replies to a message that
you posted. You will know immediately when an answer has been posted to your
    question.
Search old messages. Search through the
    whole archive of old messages.
Sort messages. Sort messages by either
the date on which a thread was started, or by the date of the last reply to a
particular thread. Now, if someone replies to a message that you originally
posted some time ago, it will sort to the top of the list. This makes it very
easy to see the new messages in a forum.
Include HTML in your messages. Make your
messages look good! Include HTML text in the body of your message.

Nice job. I am glan to see that you have redesigned the message board. I use this all the time and would be lost without it.
I have used your programs since your first version and refuse to change to another program.

I love the support on this message board.

    Thanks again
    Bob
    NB: your efforts are appreciated!

        Selwyn,
the new message board is a big improvement. One thing though, the login procedure can be a real pain. You should specify that passwords are to be all caps only and perhaps the cooky with the password could last longer. I don't know what it's set at but a month or so seems reasonable.

        Thanks
        Russ

At the bottom of the screen you will see a Modify Preferences link. Use this to change the password that was assigned to you.

The cookie is set for two months.

            Thanks Selwyn

The cookie seemed to expire in a few days but I'll check again.

I still think there is a problem with the cookies. They are ok if I am on every day, but skip 2 (or so) days and I have to log on again. I'm not getting anywhere 2 months. Is anyone else seeing this or is it just me.

RE: Welcome to the New Message Board

I've never gotten a cookie that remains after rebooting (3 different systems) and still have to log in after going to another site, but figured I probably had set something wrong in my internet settings.

                  Jim & Russ:

Are you actually logging out of the forum when you leave each time? My experience is that if you do log out then yes, next time you return you have to log in. If when leaving you don't log out and just move on then next time you return, voila.....

                  Regards

Nope, never logged out - I guess that explains it. (Loggin out is an extra click, doesn't seem to me it should be necessary)

RE: Welcome to the New Message Board

                        Hello Russ,

Possibly you have a third party program on your system that "cleans cookies from your system". I have seen these programs for the privacy minded persons.

Assuming you are using Win95/98, check your Internet Options from the control panel. Select Security tab and click on Custom. You may need to set custom controls.

There are two sections for cookies:

                        1) Allow cookies that are stored on your computer.
                        2) Allow per-session cookies (not stored).

You want both checked. If you have only item 2 checked, that could be the problem.

                        Jose

One other thing, what web browser are you using? If you have both IE and Netscape on your computer. Check to see if the cookie timeout occurs with both or only one browser. If it is just one browser then it is probably a setting in your browser somewhere.

Both sets of cookies are enabled, and am using IE 5 (Netscape never loaded). Also don't log-off when leaving.

Will be building a new system in a couple of days. Maybe I'll be able to save the cookies on that one.

Silicon investor works fine, which knows who I am.

Alpha asks me each time, maybe not each time, but it seems like each time.
