Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Why won't my install work on my home pc?!

    Hey all,
Not only did my daughter spill milk on my ergo keyboard - and I have to use the yuky one, now that I can hardly type on -

but also, I brought home an application from work to test it, which installs supposedly and apparently okay. Yet, when I open the app, it gives me an error message that "device is not ready...d:\family_center...blah blah blah. Great! I don't want it on drive d and didn't install it on drive d!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is exasperating! I must go to my government-work-related client on Friday to install this very same cd - THAT WORKS GREAT AT MY OFFICE!

So, what do you think? Please help. I'm desperate, here, now...:(((((((((((

    Thank you,
    Wanda

    Wanda,

Lets not cry over spilled milk ;)

    Questions?

How are you opening the application? shortcut? clicking on the .adb file? ect.

Do you have a drive D at work and is it possible there is some hard coded path issues perhaps?

Have you tried to open the app after starting A5?

Do you have a autoexec script in the app?

      Wanda,

I'm wondering if you're bitting off more than you need at this time; trying to learn an update installtion on an existing app.

Why can't you simply copy the files you need to a folder and save it to a CD disk? Then copy the files froom the disk to the app at the FRC.

Granted, the other is more impressive and it's something you need to learn but this is putting more stress on you than ya need. Especially since you don't know how the FRC computer will accept it. WHo knows what the folks there have done to the poor ol' puter?

Just a thought but I'd take a separate CD with just the files as plan B.

Not funny, Scott...but I forgive, 'cuz you've posed some good questions ;)

        1. Yes, opening the app via a shortcut that is created during the install.

        2. Yes, I have a drive d at work, and it IS the drive that the database, itself, was created on. How do I find out if that created a "hard coded path issue"? Why did my first round of installs of the same database, install properly on my client's machines - 5 total?

        3. No, haven't tried opening the app after starting A5, because if it worked, then I still wouldn't know if it would open on client's machine, who doesn't have A5.

        4. No, no autoexec script that I put on it, anyway...

        Question:
Are there known problems/solution when one developes an app on drivd Windows 2000, and installs it on Windows XP?

        THANK YOU.

RE: Why won't my install work on my home pc?!

          Hi Ken,
          Thanks, but - yeah...but...

Well, for one, several things on their app suddenly quit working - couldn't print reports, couldn't find forms, etc. So, instead of getting her to tell me EVERYTHING it no longer did, I decided to reinstall all files (as I had a couple small things I wanted to fix, as well).

I'm not trying to impress anyone with an install versus a file copy - doubt if anyone at that office will even know the difference...I was trying to make it easier for me.

Here's what I did at my work and home computers:

          1. Moved the application's data files to a folder on drive C, named SAFE_PLACE. (.cdx, .dbf, .fpt, and water_tile)

          2. Completely deleted the application via Windows Explorer

          3. Ran the re-install

          4. Copied the SAF_PLACE files back to the same drive where the app is installed (C:/Family_Center

It works great at work, but not at home.

Could there possibly be a problem with my installation file being named c:/SETUP.EXE? Maybe it confused itself with another SETUP.EXE file? Sounds far-fetched to me, but my previous install file name was C:/FC_Setup.exe

Ken - I will take a cd with just the files, to be copied, as plan B.

Do you have a Plan C? Give them a box of Calgon and tell them to have a relaxing weekend?

          Gracias!
          Wanda

Got it fixed. The problem was that I wasn't signed on with Administrative priveledges, like I thought I was, while creating the install cd.

So, TaDa! All's well on the western front until I come whining to ya'll again! Thanks for your continued support :)
