Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Total function using data from set

    I am attempting to learn how the total function works by examining AlphaSports database. I am looking at the invoice set. First, how do you open a set in the code editor? I have entered;
    tbl = table.open("invoice.set") The error message specifies the program could not find the set.

    The second part of my question deals specifically with the total function. In the code editor I entered the following code:
    ?total(invoice_items,GRP->invoice_header,GRP->invoice->items) Error: field is not recognized.

    To work around the problem associated with opening a set I created a new form which opened the set and then attempted to run the function as a script attached to a button on the form. I get a similar error.

    Douglas,

    Check the docs. I don't think the TABLE() function was intended to be used on a form. Isn't it for reports?

    If you're trying to display on a form the current sum of a single field in all linked child table records, I think you'll find this has been discussed a number of times before. If memory serves there are two approaches:

    1) a dbsum() or tablesum() function is used in a calculated field to compute the total and display it on the form; or

    2) a field is dedicated to this in the primary table and each line item field value is posted there as they are entered.

      Douglas,

      You get to the set editor by going to the control panel, choosing the tables / sets tab, and then right clicking on the desired set. Then choose Edit Set from the right click menu. -- tom

        RE: Total function using data from set

        For a set, instead of table.open(), oddly enough you use

        set.open().

        For your total() function, setting aside the discussion about where it is to be used, you are mis-using the parameters. After issuing

        in the interactive window

        t = set.open("invoice")

        try

        ? total(invoice_items-"quantity,GRP-"invoice_header,GRP-"invoice_items)

        assuming you want to total the quantity field in the invoice_items table

        and don't forget to t.close() when you're done.

        PS, if you want a discourse on the proper places to use total(), average(), count(), etc. - well just check the documentation. It says just in reports, it means not in field rules and a few other odd places.
        There can be only one.

          RE: Total function using data from set

          Thanks, for your help. My initial problem involved attempting to open the set using the table.open(). The Xbasic reference manual indicates this is possible but I couldnt get it to work. Stans suggestions worked perfectly. It seems to me there is great deal more flexibility in working with tables then sets. From a practical point of view I am not sure creating separate tables for invoice header and invoice items is wise. Placing this information in one file would allow one to make use of the many functions available only to tables. I suspect as Tom has indicated much of what I may want to do can be accomplished with reports. I approach Alpha Five programming for an understanding on how to do the same in dbase III. I realize this is a mistake but I am reluctant to allow Alpha Five to do the work behind the scenes. I continually want to go into the code editor and trace window to see what is happening.
