Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Possible use of Saved Query?

    Possible use of Saved Query?

    Just wondering if someone can comment on the following - is it possible?

    I have an application where I want a user to be able to devise their on if/what tests based on data in one table. I figure that I can create a Form based on the table in question and they can use this with a button for the Query Geneie to create/test a Query and save the query.

    When they exit the Query Genie, I want to check the saved queries for the table and add any new ones to a seperate table that contains all query names for the table and a flag used to indicate if the Query is a Test Query (default when a new Query added to this table) or a Live Query.

    In a Form that is 'not related' to the table that the Queries were created for, I would need to code in a routine that, for each query flagged as Live in my special queries table, run that query against an opened instance of the related table. This is to occur without user intervention.

    So I guess my questions are:

    Is it possible to code a routine that will get a list of saved queries for a specified table? (from which I would then maintain my special saved queries table of info)?

    Is it possible to then run a saved query based on a table that is opened in a form where the Form is not related to the table in question?.. So lets say my form is based on table A. In an ontimer routine I manually open table B, run one or more saved queries (that my user previously created and is flagged as Live in my special queries table), interogating the result of each query (number of records and associated table data).

    Hope this makes sense... any direction would be much appreciated.

    Regards,
    Scott

    RE: Possible use of Saved Query?

    I see that saved queries only run in a form or browse that is based on that table/set of the saved query.

    I can't see a way where I can give my user the flexibility to create multiple queries for a table using the Query Genie and then me to have a routine that will run and action records based on any user queries created - in a Form that is not based on the table that the query is written for - right? What I want is like batch processing of any queries that a user creates..

      Scott,

      I wonder if you're not reinventing the wheels unecessarily. Do you really need a new table of query names and table names apart from the Alpha5 system?

      Whatever, as for your first question you can get a list of all queries for a given table name with one expression:

      tbl_nam="s_time_leave"
      ?filter_string_smatch(a5.Query_Enum(),"*\\"+tbl_nam+".*",crlf())
      = Tardy_Test@\\server1\pers$\s_time_leave.set
      Query_Tardy@\\server1\pers$\s_time_leave.set
      qTardy@\\server1\pers$\s_time_leave.set

      My 2 cents.

        RE: Possible use of Saved Query?

        Thanks Steve - I need my table of queries as the user will create queries - test them and flag some as live (use them in live auto processing) and others as Test (they can test them but an auto process will not run them).

        But I think I can not do with a saved query what I need in part 2 - that is, can't run a saved query unless it is run in a Form/browse that is basedon the saved query.

        In a manually coded query on a table, for example:

        query.filer="a filter expresion"
        query.order"an order expresion"
        etc..

        I want to make this dynamic and swap the expressions for those from one or more queries that the user has created using the genie.

        Regards,
        Scott

          RE: Possible use of Saved Query?

          I think I need my own 'end user expression builder' - for many reasons - like since the user should not use "Ask for value at runtime" and other options that are in the genie.

          I could save the end user built expressions in to a table and then use them in a routine that would cycle through and query based on the saved expressions (substituted in to the query.filter and query.order values)..
