Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Thumbnail fun

    Donna Marie's letter raised the question in my own mind of how hard it would be to do a database with thumbnails. I put together the attached DB fairly quickly, with my only stumbling block being that while A5 transparently changes a loaded JPG to a BMP, you have to manually change the BMP back to a JPG when said BMP is being assigned to a field.

    There is a small glitch in this program, however, at least when I run it on this machine.

    If you load picture after picture, sometimes the on-form images won't change. Not always. Sometimes just the thumb changes. Sometimes just the fulli image changes. Sometimes neither change.

    The right data gets loaded into the table in every case.

    Any thoughts?

      Only one record has any images in your table.

        RE: Thumbnail fun

        Blake,

        I put together a quick thumbnail/photo database for Donna from some stuff I picked up here on the board, and some stuff I have on a search form in my database. It uses as an example the imagefile reference field.

        The script that loads the big pic is well documented, and explains a few things well so it should be easy to understand. I don't remember who wrote it.

        To use, unzip into a seperate directory and then open the pictures form, select a search type, enter something in the search box ( a, the, will, or etc.) and click search. The results returned are then displayed. The show all button will show all records in record number order and bring you back to the first record. Click the Big Pic button to see the big picture.

        Thumbnails in the directory are prefixed by TN_

        The PicturesView form uses a hotspot over the thumbnail, but otherwise works the same.

        All scripts are on the buttons, or the form.

        Like I said it is really quick and dirty, and I'm sure many people could improve on some of the code, but it works.

          I think this is the thread where that concept was initially presented. There is a good discussion of the issues and concepts or using images and thumbnails.

            Jerry,

            Yes, you are correct with the link. Thanks also for posting the bigger picture script. I couldn't remember where I had found the script.

              1. Open up the form.
              2. Click on the button.
              3. Load an image.
              4. a. The big image will update.
              b. The little image will update.
              5. Go to step 3 (but use a different image). Eventually either 4a or 4b (or both) wilL NOT occur. I.e., eventually, either the big image or the thumbnail will retain the PREVIOUS picture.

              Happens on both my work machines here.

                Good links.

                Can anyone confirm the issue I'm having with the database I uploaded? The code is straightforward enough, but if the record already has data in it the image on the form doesn't always update. (The table is updated correctly, just not the form.)

                sourceFileName = ui_get_file("Pick a JPEG to load.", "JPEGS (*.jpg)", "", "X")
                source = file.to_blob(sourceFilename)
                ui_bitmap_load("source", source)
                ui_bitmap_create("dest", 1.3, 1.3)
                ui_bitmap_draw("dest", ""%code%
                bitmap("source", 0, 0, 1.3, 1.3, "stretch")
                %code%)
                dest = ui_bitmap_save("dest")

                tbl = table.current()
                tbl.change_begin()
                tbl.image = source
                tbl.thumb = bitmap_to_jpeg(dest)
                tbl.change_end()

                ui_bitmap_drop("source")
                ui_bitmap_drop("dest")

                parentform.refresh_fields() 'This should do it, I think
                parentform.Refresh_Layout() 'Added for paranoia

                  I didn't try your code, but it looks very good. However, since you made the change on a second instance of the table, you will need topparent.resynch() to see the new change. Instead of opening a new instance, why not use table.current() to get a pointer to the current open table and change the data actually shown on the form. Not a big difference, and either should work, but using existing open table is a little cleaner.

                    Duh, you are using table.current(). Don't know what I was looking at. But I would try resynch() anyway. I try to avoid it as much as possible, but there are times it is the best approach.

                      Thank you, Jerry!

                      Resynch did the trick.
