Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Error messages

This is a new one when my client attempts to click various buttons on the Main/Opering Form of my application. Up to now, the app has been working 100%

There are buttons that call up various forms. Two are"Work Order" & "Prevent".

    Script:On Push line:5
    :Form.view("Work Order")
    Error 1

    Script:On Push line:5
    :Form.view("Prevent")
    Error 1

And this morning SAME client, tried to SAVE a new Purchase Order she got this error message:
Invalid argument passed to A_RULE API.

It sure would be nice to have an Error list with possible solutions. This was something in older versions.

I have a new Email address so direct mail sud go to [email protected].

    Thanks. Am I stumped!!!!!!!

    RE: Error messages

Do you have a utility form on the client's app? If so, do you have a button that performs a database compact? If not, it needs one. There are other utility features that should be on this form as well.

If the app is not too big, have the client zip it up and send it to you. recreate the buttons if necessary.

      RE: Error messages

I should have given more details:
1.I have the identical application on my PC.
2.I am running Windows 98SE while she is running XP.
3.I installed her data in my application.
4.I can save a PO with NO error messages.
5.I can print this same Purchase Order with NO error messages.

Are both application folders in exactly the same path on both machines?

          RE: Error messages

One other thing when she tried to print a Purchase Order (which is a report) she gets this error. The printing of the PO is done by a button on the form.

          Action Program Error
          Trapped error in action command:[1}
          Command:Inline Xbasic
          Error:variable type mismatch

As I mentioned in my last message, I can print the identical PO without the error message above.

As far as I know both applications are in the same folder. She can print other reports via buttons on the screen.

            RE: Error messages

            DeWayne,

I think either of two problems is present:

            1) Some of the tables on your development machine do not physically reside in the same folder as your primary database library file (the ADB file for your database); or

            2) The user is starting the database with a shortcut that sets the wrong path for the application.

Have these parts of your application ever worked on the user's machine?

Are all the tables in your database located in the same folder as your ADB file?

Did Alpha Five generate the startup shortcut for you?

              RE: Error messages

              Here is my

              Target:
              "C:\Pro Maintainer Professional\Runtime\alpha5.exe" "C:\Pro Maintainer Professional\Application\Pro Maintainer Professional.adb" -icon="Pro Maintainer Professional.ico" -title="PRO MAINTAINER Professional" -splash="Splash.bmp"

              Startin
              "C:\Pro Maintainer Professional\application"

My clients is identical. We run the SAME application, installed from same setup.exe & with same data.

ALL files in database except runtime are in the folder "applciation" including Pro Maintainer.a*

The short-cut was NOT created by Alpha5 during install.

The last answer is a trickey one. When she attempts to run our system with DEMO data, she can run it OK but if she DELETES all sample data & attempts to add her own then she encounters this error.

Like I said, I can RUN her data perfectly. Aka save & print a PO with NO error.

                DeWayne,
For some reason, I think your client's app might work if she adds at least one of her own records to each table before deleting the demo data.

Quirkier things have worked for odd problems such as this.
