Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Opening a form - Goto last record

    I am having a strange problem. On an Oninit action for a form I placed a Set index action (Sets an invoice number ascending index) then I put a goto last record action. This works sometimes and sometimes it does not.

    All I want to do is open the form, set the index and goto the last (highest) invoice number. Any ideas for this. It seems so simple but I dont understand why it does not work. Thanks in advance.

    John,

    In form properties select Filter/Order tab. This will enable you to open a form or even a browse within a form in the order you want.

      Actually I have tried that. I have some sort criteria entered there for the browse. When the program starts up I just want to set an index then go to the last record of that index.

        John,

        First thought here would be to use the OnActivate event for the form, instead of OnInit.

        Second would be to furnish a lot more detail for us. Each table in the set has indexes. The form uses one to connect the child table to the primary. This latter index cannot be changed without breaking the form, so Alpha won't let you change it. Are you talking about setting the primary index for a child table or the parent table in your set?

          RE: Opening a form - Goto last record

          When my software opens to the primary form, I would like it to go to the last record.

          The primary form has one database called tripinfo there is a one to many like and that browse is also on the same form.

          I have set in the form properties a sort order for the browse on the form.

          The primary form is linked via a "trip number", I have an ascending sort index on this field. It is this field that I would like to go to the last record.

          I really do not need to set the index, this is just the method I was using. I also wanted this to only occur at startup as I leave this form and come back to specific trip numbers. I believe if I use the on activate this would occur everytime the form gets its focus back?

          I could probably do this with an autoexec script. If I wanted to open a form, maximize it, turn off the control panel (basically all the things the database property screen allows you to do when you check all the boxes),how could I do this? I would prefer to leave it as an oninit script(if possible) but I am willing to try anything. Thank you very much.

            John,

            I accomplished this with two action scripts: one to set the record, and another to go to the last record.

            When I right-clicked on the script to View X-Basic for all actions, here is what it gave me:

            'Set the index to : 'Po_Number' in current window.
            topparent.Index_SetExplicit("Po_Number")

            'Go to last record in current form at parent level.
            topparent.fetch_last()

            I hope this helps.

              RE: Opening a form - Goto last record

              John,

              You're right. OnActivate for the form fires each time the form receives focus.

              Instead of making the form the 'startup' form for the database, why not use the autoexec script to set the index.

              Load the form
              set the index
              show the form

              Autoexec will be processed when the database opens, but not again.

                RE: Opening a form - Goto last record

                wouldn't doing it in the oninit event do the same thing - the first time you opened it it would go to the last record, but not when you come back to it, as from some other form? that way it could still be the primary form for the database.

                  just looked at your first question - at the top of your onit event, put xbasic_wait_for_idle() - that would likely cause a pause sufficient for it to work.

                    Martin,

                    Yes, or so it would seem.

                    In other threads users have reported trouble with script sequences firing in the right order when using OnInit. As a first stab at a solution for him, I thought moving it to OnActivate might help. This has helped others. -- tom

                      RE: Opening a form - Goto last record

                      In the oninit event, set a 1st time switch. In the onactivate event, if the switch is on, jump to the last record and set the switch off so it only happens that one time.

                        RE: Opening a form - Goto last record

                        I tried
                        xbasic_wait_for_idle()
                        topparent.Index_SetExplicit("Trip_Number")
                        xbasic_wait_for_idle()
                        topparent.fetch_last()
                        in the onit script. It works after you design the form, save it, and press the form view button the form appears and does the script, however if you shut the program down and start it up, it does not work. This seems like a bug.

                        I could do this as an autoexec, my question is what is the syntax to do all of the things you set in the database properties?

                        Open the form
                        hide the control panel
                        maximize form
                        turn off min max and restore system buttons
                        max alpha five
                        hide window bar tool bar
                        ?????

                        Thank you all for your input!

                            you should be able to do that in design mode for the form in the menus/toolbars section by setting none and in the window tab unchecking min/max/etc.
